Remarks. This species was originally described as Bothriogaster variolaris Fuhrmann, 1904 from immature specimens parasitizing birds in Java ( Fuhrmann, 1904); however, Pérez Vigueras (1940) provided some additional descriptive information (see below). Bothriogaster ( Fuhrmann, 1904) was preoccupied and Dollfus (1948) renamed it Bothrigaster Dollfus, 1948. Kossack (1911), Harrah (1922), Witenberg (1923) and Yamaguti (1958, 1971) considered Bothrigaster (Syn. Bothriogaster ) and Spaniometra to be distinct genera and retained this species in Bothrigaster with Bothrigaster variolaris ( Fuhrmann, 1904) as the type species. Joyeux & Baer (1927) transferred this species to Spaniometra and Bashkirova (1950) also considered it to be a species of Spaniometra. This species has a postesticular ovary that forms a straight line with the tandem testes (Ophthalmophaginae), a postpharyngeal genital pore and the vitelline fields are not confluent posteriorly, placing it in Bothrigaster. Pérez Vigueres (1940) redescribed this species from adult specimens parasitizing the snail kite in South America. The host data base of the Natural History Museum, London lists Bothrigaster variolaris as an unverified name. Rudimentary ventral sucker present; oral sucker absent—Fuhrmann (1904); Pérez Vigueras (1940); Bashkirova (1950); Yamaguti (1971).
