( Figs 22–24 View FIGURES 22 – 24 , 25 View FIGURE 25 )
Rhagigaster corrugatus Turner, 1910b: 262 , l♂, ♀; lectotype, ♂ (designated by Kimsey & Brown 1993), Woodford, 26.i.1909, G.A. Waterhouse, (BMNH).
Diagnosis. Male. S1 broadly medially raised, not sagittally raised or carinate; pronotum weakly transversely rugosely punctate, especially laterally; clypeus not depressed and branches of carina weakly developed. Female. Head black ventrally, orange dorsally.
Description. Male. Head. Rounded, not emarginate posteriorly, not strongly narrowed behind eyes; clypeus truncate, weakly convex, at most weakly depressed apically, sagittal carina short, closely punctate laterally and basally, polished and sparsely punctate apically; antennal prominence with weakly developed V-shaped carina, produced below carina to antennal insertions; frons weakly transversely carinate, rugosely punctate, obscurely sagittally sulcate and longitudinally rugose below transverse carina, not depressed; vertex punctate; gena closely punctate.
Mesosoma . Pronotum as wide as head, closely to rugosely punctate, weakly transversely rugosely punctate especially laterally, anterior margin weakly emarginate, raised, carinate, weakly projecting laterally; mesoscutum rugosely punctate; tegulae closely punctate; mesoscutellum rugosely punctate, convex, subtriangular, narrowly rounded posteriorly; metanotum finely rugosely punctate, below level of mesoscutellum; propodeum rounded, not transversely carinate, closely punctate anteriorly with small medial impunctate area, finely transversely rugosely punctate posteriorly; fore coxae closely and finely punctate; mesopleura closely punctate.
Metasoma. T1–6 closely punctate anteriorly, sparsely punctate posteriorly; S1 rugosely punctate, S2–7 closely punctate; gradulus straight and impunctate on T2–6, straight and scrobiculate on S3–6, discontinuous medially on S6, absent on S7; T1 truncate anteriorly, weakly subtuberculate above truncation; S1 broadly but weakly medially raised, not sagittally carinate; S2 at most weakly raised anteromedially; hypopygium without basal angles; cuspis long and hooked; paracuspis short.
Colour. Black; ocellar macula orange; wings hyaline.
Length. Body 19 mm; fore wing 12 mm; hind wing 9 mm.
Female. Head. Subquadrate, posterior angles rounded; clypeus truncate, sagittally carinate; frons longitudinally rugosely, sagittally sulcate; vertex rugose, not medially depressed; gena punctate; eyes large and elliptical; mandibles bidentate.
Mesosoma .. Pronotum weakly convex, not depressed near posterior angles, anterior angles not produced, longitudinally rugosely punctate; mesoscutellum weakly convex, weakly narrowed posteriorly, longitudinally rugosely punctate; propodeum weakly convex, not laterally depressed, punctate posteriorly, not densely setose, longitudinally rugosely punctate dorsally with impunctate anterior margin, impunctate laterally, closely and finely punctate posteriorly.
Metasoma. T1–5 closely longitudinally multicarinate; S1–5 closely longitudinally punctate; T1 truncate, anterior angles rounded; T5 and S5 not produced; pygidium subtriangular, not spinose, closely punctate, not tuberculate.
Colour. Head (except antennae, mandibles, frons and vertex) and body (except legs) black; antennae, frons, vertex, fore tibia distally, fore and mid tarsi yellowish orange; mandibles and legs (except fore tibiae distally, and fore and mid tarsi) dark brown.
Length. Body 14–15 mm.
Distribution. Coast and adjacent ranges of eastern Australia from near Sydney, New South Wales to Portland, Victoria.
Remarks. Turner (1910b) was unable to place this species satisfactorily in either Rhagigaster or Rhytidothynnus (as Rhytidogaster ), and therefore synonymised the two genera.
The record from Kuranda, north Queensland, is considered to be incorrect and is therefore not shown on the distribution map (fig. 25). Males resemble R. houstoni sp. nov. which has S2 tuberculate anteromedially and R. neocorrugatus sp. nov. which has an inverted cordate area on the clypeus. Females resemble R. confusus sp. nov. which has the tergites closely and deeply punctate.
