( Fig. 1–4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 14–16 View FIGURES 14 – 16 )
Rhagigaster burnsi Given, 1959: 313 .
Diagnosis. Male. Clypeus with short sagittal carina only, strongly depressed from carina to apex; pronotum dorsomedially and vertex sparsely and shallowly punctate; legs ferruginous. Female. Head with broad yellow band between eyes; antennae, clypeus and legs ferruginous; and punctures on metasomal terga smaller and shallower than on dorsum of mesosoma .
Description. Male. Head. Rounded, not emarginate posteriorly, not strongly narrowed behind eyes; clypeus truncate, not convex with short sagittal carina, broadly depressed apically, closely punctate laterally, polished and sparsely punctate apically; antennal prominence with broad V-shaped carina, produced below carina to antennal insertions; frons transversely carinate, rugosely punctate, sagittally carinate and broadly depressed below transverse carina; vertex sparsely punctate; gena punctate.
Mesosoma . Pronotum narrower than head, punctate, anterior margin straight, strongly raised, carinate, strongly projecting laterally into acute spine; mesoscutum rugosely punctate; tegulae punctate basally; mesoscutellum closely and deeply punctate to rugosely punctate, flat, subtriangular, narrowly rounded posteriorly; metanotum closely punctate, below level of mesoscutellum; propodeum rounded, not transversely carinate, closely punctate anteriorly with medial impunctate area, finely transversely punctate posteriorly; fore coxae finely punctate; mesopleura closely to rugosely punctate.
Metasoma. T1–6 sparsely punctate; S1 closely punctate, S2–7 punctate; gradulus straight and impunctate on T2–6, straight and weakly scrobiculate on S3–6, discontinuous medially on S6, obscure on S7; T1 obliquely truncate anteriorly, medially tuberculate above truncation; S1 weakly raised; S2 at most weakly raised anteromedially; hypopygium with rounded basal angles; cuspis weakly hooked; paracuspis of medium length.
Colour. Black; ocellar macula orange; legs ferruginous; wings weakly infuscate.
Length. Body 21–23 mm; fore wing 16–17 mm; hind wing 12–13 mm.
Female. Head. Subquadrate, posterior angles rounded; clypeus truncate with inverted Y-shaped carina; frons longitudinally rugosely punctate, obscurely sagittally sulcate; vertex rugosely punctate, not medially depressed; gena rugosely punctate; eyes large and elliptical; mandibles bidentate.
Mesosoma .. Pronotum weakly convex, not depressed near posterior angles, anterior angles not produced, rugosely punctate; mesoscutellum weakly convex, weakly narrowed posteriorly, rugosely punctate; propodeum flat, not laterally depressed, punctate posteriorly, not densely setose, rugosely punctate dorsally, impunctate laterally, closely and finely punctate posteriorly.
Metasoma. T1–5 longitudinally rugosely punctate; S1–5 punctate; T1 truncate, anterior angles rounded; T5 and S5 not produced; pygidium subtriangular, not spinose, closely punctate, weakly anterolaterally subtuberculate.
Colour. Brown; frons with broad yellow band; legs ferruginous
Length. Body 17 mm.
Distribution. Coastal ranges of eastern Australia from near Brisbane, Queensland to Hunter Valley, New South Wales.
Remarks. Males are readily distinguished from all know species by the sparser punctation on the vertex and pronotum and the ferruginous legs. Differs from R. corrugatus by: integument polished, punctation shallower and sparser; clypeus strongly depressed; antennal prominence with broad V-shaped carina; frons sagittally carinate; pronotum with anterior margin acutely produced laterally into spines; mesoscutellum flat; T1 obliquely truncate anteriorly; cuspis weakly hooked; paracuspis of medium length; legs ferruginous; wings weakly infuscate.
Females resemble R. fulvescens sp. nov. and R. brunneus sp. nov. which have black legs. Differs from R. corrugatus by: clypeus with an inverted Y-shaped carina; frons longitudinally rugosely punctate, obscurely sagittally sulcate; vertex rugosely punctate; gena rugosely punctate; pronotum and mesoscutellum, rugosely punctate; propodeum flat, rugosely punctate dorsally; T1–5 longitudinally rugosely punctate; S1–5 punctate; pygidium subtriangular, not spinose, closely punctate; black with frons yellow and legs ferruginous.
Specimens have been collected at altitudes up to 1,280 m.
