Rugosothynnus clypeatus sp. nov.
( Fig. 17–19 View FIGURE 17 View FIGURES 18 – 21 )
Diagnosis. Male. Branches of clypeal carina strongly developed into inverted U-shaped carina but not reaching apex; clypeus strongly depressed between branches but weakly depressed from carina branch to apex.
Description. Male. Head. Rounded, not emarginate posteriorly, weakly narrowed behind eyes; clypeus emarginate, convex with inverted branched carina, branches forming strongly developed inverted U-shaped carina, strongly depressed between branches, weakly depressed apically, closely punctate laterally and basally, polished and sparsely punctate apically; antennal prominence with strongly developed V-shaped carina, produced below carina to antennal insertions; frons weakly transversely carinate, rugosely punctate, sagittally carinate and weakly depressed below transverse carina; vertex closely punctate, impunctate posterolaterally to hind ocelli; gena closely punctate.
Mesosoma . Pronotum as wide as head, rugosely punctate, anterior margin weakly emarginate, raised, carinate, produced laterally; mesoscutum rugosely punctate; tegulae closely punctate basally; mesoscutellum rugosely punctate, weakly convex, subtriangular, narrowly rounded posteriorly; metanotum rugosely punctate, below level of mesoscutellum; propodeum oblique posteriorly, not transversely carinate, rugosely punctate anteriorly with small medial impunctate area, transversely rugosely punctate posteriorly; fore coxae closely punctate; mesopleura rugosely punctate.
Metasoma. T1–6 rugosely punctate anteriorly, sparsely punctate posteriorly; S1 rugosely punctate, S2–7 closely punctate; gradulus weakly curved and impunctate on T2, straight and impunctate on T3–6, straight and scrobiculate on S3–5, weakly curved, punctate and discontinuous medially on S6, obscure on S7; T1 obliquely truncate anteriorly, not tuberculate; S1 medially raised; S2 anteromedially subtuberculate; hypopygium with angulate basal angles; cuspis truncate; paracuspis of medium length.
Colour. Black; ocellar macula orange; wings hyaline.
Length. Body 16 mm; fore wing 10 mm; hind wing 8 mm.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. South-western Western Australia near Wubin.
Etymology. The species name is derived from Latin and refers to the male clypeus which has an atypical carina.
Remarks. Male. Clypeus with an inverted Y-shaped carina, the branches of which are short and curved, and the apical margin emarginate. Males resemble R. depressus sp. nov. which has the apical margin of the clypeus deeply and broadly emarginate.
Differs from R. corrugatus by: punctation closer and deeper, rugose-punctate on head, mesosoma and S1; clypeus emarginate with an inverted Y-shaped carina, branches rugose and incurved; antennal prominence with V-shaped carina; pronotum with anterior margin acutely produced laterally; propodeum oblique posteriorly; T1 obliquely truncate anteriorly; S2 anteromedially subtuberculate; S8 with angulate basal angles; cuspis truncate; paracuspis of medium length.
Material examined. Western Australia: Holotype ♂ 64 km NE of Wubin, 29o 42'S, 117o 06'E, 28.ix.1981, I.D. Naumann and J.C. Cardale, ( ANIC).
