Remarks: The generic position and even specific status of this species is obscure. It is a member of the genus Cryptopygus in Christiansen & Bellinger (1980, 1998). On www. collembola .org it is treated as a junior synonym of C. agreni ( Börner, 1903) which has “no actual Nearctic records” ( Christiansen & Bellinger 1980, p. 611). Our interpretation of its position is mainly based on James’s comment that “this form is allied to Axelson’s Finland species, Proisotoma (Isotomina) thermophila , especially in respect to the mucro dentition”.
General distribution: Nearctic.
