Taxonomy. Mus carillus Thomas, 1904 ,

“Pungo Andongo, [Angola]. Alt. 1200 m.”

Taxonomic affiliation of specimens from Angola is unclear and require revision to determine the number and identity of species involved. Monotypic.

Distribution. W & C Angola; it may also occur in neighboring DR Congo. View Figure

Descriptive notes. Head—body 87-97 mm, tail 118-146 mm, ear 17-19 mm, hindfoot 19-19-5 mm. No specific data are available

for body weight. Fur of the Angolan Wood Mouse is soft and moderately dense, brown to rufous brown above and whitish gray below. Lips, cheeks, throat, and chest are white. Flanks are sharply demarcated from venter by orange line. Tail is long (c.130% of head-body length) and appears naked except for tuft of hair at tip. Fifth digit on hindfoot is opposable and almost as long as second to fourth digits. Females have 3-4 pairs of nipples. Incisors are orthodont.

Habitat. Probably forested areas.

Activity patterns. The Angolan Wood Mouse is presumably arboreal and nocturnal.
