The combination in Xylosma in pre-empted by three earlier names. The new epithet chosen commemorates Charly Zongo (1980–2015), for his contribution to our knowledge on the seed physiology of New Caledonian plants ( Bombarda et al. 2010; Zongo 2010; Zongo et al. 2016).
