Stenolis multimacula View in CoL sp. nov.
( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 7 – 12. 7 )
Description. Male. Integument dark brown. Pubescence predominantly dark brown dorsally except for grayish white maculae, as follows: seven rounded or triangular spots on pronotum, four in transverse line near anterior margin, one in center of pronotum, and two near posterior margin; elytra with numerous rounded spots, more or less arranged in two longitudinal lines and the others scattered on surface, and three larger marks near external margin. Ventral surface covered with dense grayish pubescence.
Antennae reaching apices of elytra at middle of antennomere VI. Prothorax rounded at sides, and with a very obtuse projection on posterior third. Punctures restricted to single line parallel to posterior margin. Apices of the elytra obliquely emarginate, external angle projecting in short tooth; suture angle less projecting. Punctures of elytra scarce and y scattered on basal third. Fifth urotergite truncate at apex; fifth urosternite triangularly emarginate at extremity. Metatarsomere I as long as II+III.
Female. Antennae reaching apices of elytra approximately at distal tip of antennomere VI. Ovipositor slightly projecting beyond elytral apices, distal urotergite transversely truncate; urosternite semicircularly emarginate at apex.
Measurements (mm), male/female. Total length, 5.5–7.0/6.8; prothorax length, 1.0–1.5/1.2; prothorax width, 1.5–2.1/2.0; elytral length, 3.7–4.8/4.7; humeral width, 2.0–2.5/2.5.
Etymology. Latin, multi = many, plus maculae = spots, alluding to the abundant spots on the elytra.
Type material. Holotype male, COSTA RICA, Guanacaste: San Luis (2 km E Canas), 5.XI.1971, A. Cordero col. ( CNCI). Paratypes, same data, 3 males, female ( CNCI, MNRJ). Puntarenas: Golfito, male, 23.VII.1957, Truxal & Menke col. ( MNRJ).
Comments. The pattern of pubescence on the elytra, with numerous rounded spots of grayish-white pubescence, is common to S. multimacula and to S. vigintiguttata . The pattern differs mainly in the pattern of the pronotum, which in the new species consists of seven rounded or triangular spots, four in a transverse line near the anterior margin, one in the center of the pronotum, and two near the posterior margin; whereas S. vigintiguttata has a median grayish longitudinal line and interrupted lines on the sides of the pronotum.
