Lanistes nasutus Mandahl-Barth, 1972: 265 View in CoL , pl. 6, fig. 12. Type material — holotype [by original designation]: MRAC 796870; paratype: MRAC 796871 (1 spm.). Type locality —“Lake Malawi 5 miles north-east of Monkey Bay at 270 feet ”. Distribution —endemic to Lake Malawi ( Brown 1980: 52, 1994: 62; Berthold 1990: 48).
Remarks. Mandahl-Barth (1972: 266) noted nine specimens from the type locality and two from “north of Boadzula Isl. 150 feet ”, a total of 11 specimens. He specifically identified the holotype and only one paratype, in MRAC, the other nine specimens are therefore not paratypes, as the separate mention of the latter expressly excludes them from the type series (Code, Art. 72.4.6). Six of these are ZMUC GAS 1713. However, this ZMUC lot does contain an additional three specimens but they are orthostrophic and therefore not Lanistes . Whether they are the remaining three of the 11 original specimens is not known and requires further research. All the MRAC and ZMUC specimens are supposedly from the type locality, so the whereabouts of the specimens from “north of Boadzula Isl.” also requires further research. Valid species, teste Brown (1980: 52, 1994: 62) and Berthold (1991: 246), who both placed it in Lanistes s. str.
