ICZN (1999a), following Cowie (1997b: 83–88), confirmed the name Pilidae View in CoL as a junior synonym of Ampullariidae View in CoL and invalid.
Starobogatov & Sitnikova (1983: 22) recognized three subfamilies in Ampullariidae View in CoL (as “ Pilidae View in CoL ”): Pilinae, Pomaceinae View in CoL and Lanistinae . The diagnoses were minimal (dextral with calcified operculum, dextral with noncalcified operculum, sinistral hyperstrophic with non-calcified operculum, respectively) but reflect the distinctive characteristics of their type genera. However, no other information was given and these subfamilies are not recognized as valid in this catalogue , as also by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005: 247).
Berthold (1991: 206) recognized two subfamilies: Afropominae (containing the genus Afropomus View in CoL only) and Ampullariinae View in CoL (containing all other ampullariids). Within Ampullariinae View in CoL , he recognized two tribes: Sauleini View in CoL (containing the genus Saulea View in CoL only) and Ampullariini (containing all other species in the subfamily Ampullariinae View in CoL ). This arrangement, as the most recent formal classification, was adopted by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005: 247). Within the Ampullariini Berthold (1991: 206–212) further recognized a number of named subdivisions, listed above, none of which is nomenclaturally available. Both reanalysis of the morphological data of Berthold (1991) by Bieler (1993) and molecular analysis (Hayes et al. 2009) provide little support for the systematic arrangement of Berthold. His new subfamilies and tribes are therefore listed here as synonyms of Ampullariidae View in CoL and his other new family-group names listed under Ampullariidae View in CoL are unavailable.
