ETYMOLOGY. — The species is named in honor of Danièle Thouvenot, wife and long time supporter of the entomological activities of Marc Thouvenot, who provided specimens for the type series as well as collecting examples of many new records for the French Guiana cicada fauna.

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Additional specimens that are not part of the type series but were studied include “ GUYANE FRANÇAISE / Piste Risque Tout-PK 16 / 4 mai 1991 / Piège lumineux” female ( MTC) and “GUYANE FRANÇAISE / Piste de Saint-Elie / 3 avril 1997 / Piège lumineux”, 1 ♀ ( MTC). A female was chosen for the holotype as females appear to be attracted to light traps in greater frequency.

DISTRIBUTION. — The species is only known from French Guiana.

DIAGNOSIS. — Selymbria danieleae n. sp. can be differentiated from S. pandora Distant, 1911 , S. stigmatica ( Germar, 1830) , and S. subolivacea ( Stål, 1862) by the lack of infuscation extending from the radial crossvein to the anterior margin of the fore wing and S. ahyetios Ramos & Wolda, 1985 which lacks the infuscation of the distal portion of apical cells 1 and 2. Finally, S. pluvialis Ramos & Wolda, 1985 lacks the infuscation of the radial and radiomedial crossveins found in S. danieleae n. sp.

DESCRIPTION

Ground color tawny castaneous marked with fuscous or piceous.

Head wider than mesonotum, tawny castaneous, lighter along posterior margin, with piceous spots along posterior margin of median ocellus, median margin of lateral ocelli, on supra-antennal plate along lateral angle of frontoclypeal suture and above antenna, and posterior to eye. Paratype ground color more castaneous with tawny posterior margin and additional piceous mark in anterior cranial depression lateral to lateral ocelli and spots on supra-antennal plates fused.Ocelli rosaceus, eyes golden.Dorsal head with short golden pile, thicker in paratypes.Ventral head ground color, piceous mark on supra-antennal plate continues across gena to eye then curves along ventromedial margin of eye and posterior gena along lorum piceous. Postclypeus centrally sulcate, ground color darker, piceous in paratypes, between supra-antennal plates and ventrally along midline and medial transverse ridges, with ten transverse grooves. Anteclypeus dark castaneous, piceous in paratypes. Short white pile on lateral postclypeus, longer on gena, lorum, and anteclypeus, very thick in male paratype.Rostrum with ochraceous mentum with castaneous distolateral region, labium castaneous proximally becoming darker distally, piceous laterally and at tip, reaching to middle trochanters. Scape proximal pedicel tawny, remaining antennal segments castaneous.

Dorsal thorax ground color, midline tawny but mark not reaching anterior and posterior margins. Piceous marks on either side of posterior midline at pronotal collar, lateral disc darker, piceous in female paratype. Pronotal collar lighter laterally, lateral portion absent. Mesonotum ground color with fuscous mark over posteromedial submedian sigilla and lateral sigilla, darkness and amount of submedian sigilla covered varies in paratypes and lateral mark curves medially into hook shape posteriorly in male paratype. Scutal depression piceous. Metanotum ground color. Sparse, long golden pile between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, along lateral mesonotum and wing groove.Dorsum covered with short golden pile, thicker in paratypes.Ventral thoracic segments tawny, except darker basisternum 2, katepisternum 2, anterior anepisternum 2, anterior katepimeron 2, basisternum 3, basisternum 2 fuscous in paratypes. Ventral thorax covered with white pile, very dense in male paratype.

Tegmina and wings hyaline, tegmina with eight apical cells, hind wing with five apical cells. Venation tawny, becoming testaceous distally, except fuscous anal vein 2 + 3, fuscous junction of cubitus anterior 2 and cubitus posterior + anal vein 1, and ochraceous proximal costal margin and radius and subcostal veins. Infuscation in distal apical cell 1 extending over ambient vein on wing margin and over radius anterior 2, distal apical cell 2 anterior to distal radius posterior 2, and covering radial and radiomedial crossveins. Basal membrane gray, darkening posteriorly. Hind wing venation tawny proximally, testaceous distally, except testaceous anal vein 2 and fuscous spot on juction of anal veins 2 and 3. Vanal fold, anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal vein 3 and proximal half of anal vein 2 gray. Infuscation in proximal anal cell 3, almost extending to distal margin in one paratype, and at junction of anal vein 2 and ambient vein.

Coxae tawny marked with fuscous anteriorly and medially, marks larger in middle and hind coxae. Trochanters dark tawny with medial fuscous mark. Femora dark tawny, fuscous ventrally with tawny distal lateral edges. Fore femora with primary spine oblique, secondary spine upright, and very small, slightly oblique tertiary spine. Spines dark tawny with piceous tips. Pretarsal claws dark tawny with piceous tips. Tibial spurs and comb dark tawny with piceous tips.

Opercula tawny, darker on base with fuscous anterolateral margin covered with white pile. Female operculum lateral margin angled to slightly curved posterior margin, rounded medially under lateral meracanthus reaching to middle of sternite II. Male operculum with lateral margin straight, angled medially, curving to obliquely oriented posterior margin to rounded medial margin and slightly curved anteriomedial margin, reaching to middle of sternite II. Medial margins not touching. Meracanthus tawny with dark base, wide reaching to posterior operculum margin in female and extending over anteromedial margin of operculum near base.

Abdomen ground color, darker areas on posterior tergite7 and 8, tergites 3-6 and sternites III-VI with tawny posterior margin. Abdomen covered with golden pile, more dense on posterior margin. Timbal with nine ribs.

Female genitalia ground color covered with fine golden pile, abdominal segment 9 lighter on posterior margin with piceous dorsal beak. Sternite VII with a single deep notch to posterior sternite VI, lateral posterior margin pointed. Dorsal beak extending to level of anal styles. Dorsal beak produces approximate right angle with posterior margin of abdominal segment 9. Gonocoxite IX and distal ovipositor sheath castaneous. Ovipositor sheath extends well beyond dorsal beak.

Male pygofer ground color with fuscous medial posterior region including dorsal beak covered with golden pile. Pygofer upper lobe short covered with long golden pile. Basal lobe of pygofer with long thick golden pile radiating medially. Median uncus lobes extended, terminus rounded and bent ventrally, dark tawny medially, ochraceous laterally. Aedeagus dark tawny, long endotheca and pseudoparamere.
