ETYMOLOGY. — The species is named in honor of Joe Eger, who provided multiple specimens to the author representing new species and records for French Guiana.
DISTRIBUTION. — The species is only known from French Guiana.
DIAGNOSIS. — The male genitalia, particularly the large upper pygofer lobe, quickly separate male specimens of T. egeri n. sp. from other species of Taphura , as each species has highly unique genitalia. All species are generally similar in size and appearance. The “W” on the dorsal head, even if not distinct, separates T. egeri n. sp. from the other Taphura species, which have transverse piceous marks across the dorsal head; if this transverse mark is incomplete, there are black marks laterally between the lateral ocelli and eye which are absent in T. egeri n. sp., T. maculata n. sp. and T. boulardi n. sp., whose “W” is separated into individual spots. Females can be differentiated from the other species of Taphura species except T. misella ( Stål, 1854) , as the anal styles are found at the widest point of gonapophysis X, while the broadest portion of gonapophysis X is beyond the anal styles in the other species of Taphura . Sternite VII is doubly notched in T. egeri n. sp. but there is a single V-shaped notch in T. misella and T. maculata n. sp. Female T. boulardi n. sp. have a double notch but the lateral portions of the posterior magin of sternite VII are angled to a greater degree; T. boulardi n. sp. lacks the longitudinal stripes on the postclypeus.
DESCRIPTION
Ground color tawny and castaneous. Chemical exposure may have faded green coloration as some paratypes have green on legs, pronotal collar, cruciform elevation, and proximal wing venation.
Head slightly wider than mesonotum, tawny with fuscous mark from posterior to angle of frontoclypeal suture to posterior of lateral ocellus angling along median margin of lateral ocellus to enclose median ocellus, forming a “W” on dorsum of head. Ocelli golden or marked with rosaceus. Eyes golden. Dorsal head with fine golden pile. Ventral head ground color, lorum piceous except anterolateral angle, some paratypes with fuscous marks on central gena and under eye. Postclypeus ground color, fuscous triangular mark beginning at angle of frontoclypeal suture, continuing on ventral surface as dark tawny line over medial portion of the transverse nine grooves, fusing posteriorly along midline. Anteclypeus ground color anteriorly, fuscous mark on posterolateral margin and fuscous spot on midline near margin, fuscous marks connected in some paratypes. Rostrum with tawny mentum, labium fuscous with long golden pile, reaching to posterior coxae. Long golden pile on posteroventral postclypeus, lorum, posterior gena, and anteclypeus, reduced in some paratype. Scape tawny, remaining antennae fuscous.
Dorsal thorax ground color. Pronotal collar, midline and anterior margin tawny. Disc castaneous. Piceous mark along either side of ochraceous midline, curving anteriorly and posteriorly before margins, anterior extension almost completely covering anterior disc to paramedian fissure, posterior extension continues through posterior half of lateral fissure, piceous marks on anterior disc between paramedian and lateral fissures and anterior margin and centrally of disc lateral to lateral fissure, proportion of discs covered with piceous varies in paratypes. Small castaneous spot on midline anterior to pronotal collar. Fine golden pile on dorsal pronotum. Mesonotum ground color with darker submedian and lateral sigillae, darkness and length of marks varies in paratypes. Area between anterior arms of cruciform elevation and submedian and lateral sigillae marks slightly darkened in some paratypes. Metanotum ground color. Sparse, long golden pile between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, and laterally on mesonotum and wing groove, fine golden pile on dorsum. Ventral thoracic segments ground color, except darker basisternum 2, trochantin 2 and episternum 2 with spots in some paratypes.
Tegmina and wings hyaline, tegmina with eight apical cells, hind wing with five apical cells. Venation ground color, becoming testaceous distally, except testaceous anal vein 2 + 3. Spot of infuscation in distal apical cell 1 extending over ambient vein on wing margin and over radius anterior 2. Basal membrane gray with piceous posterior margin. Hind wing venation ochraceous proximally, testaceous distally, except piceous anal vein 3 and proximal anal vein 2. Vanal fold, anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal veins 3 gray.
Legs ground color, greenish in some paratypes, darker on central coxae, trochanters, and middle and hind femora, distal tibiae and distal tarsi, degree of shading variable in paratypes. Fore femora with four oblique fuscous spines, becoming smaller distally. Pretarsal claws ground color at base with fuscous tips. Tibial spurs and comb tawny.
Opercula ground color. Male operculum with lateral margin angled curving to straight posterior margin, medial margin rounded and straight anteromedial margin, reaching past middle of tympanal cavity. Medial margin extending to medial margin of meracanthus. Meracanthus ground color with fuscous spot on medial base, not reaching anteromedial margin of operculum. Female operculum small with small notch in lateral margin, straight posterior margin, terminating medially at lateral meracanthus reaching to middle of tympanal cavity. Opercula with golden pile, longer in male, which also radiates from margin.
Abdomen ground color, darker areas on posterior sterniteVII, variable darker areas on anterior and/or posterior tergites or anterior sternites in some paratypes. Timbal with six ribs.
Male pygofer ground color with darkened dorsal beak. Pygofer upper lobe extended curving medially with terminus expanding first ventrally then dorsally before forming a rounded point at apex. Basal lobe of pygofer short, rounded. Pygofer and anal styles with long golden pile. Uncus lobes very small, not encircling fuscous anal styles. Aedeagus dark fuscous, proportionately large.
Female genitalia ground color, abdominal segment 9 darker ventrally along medial margin, dorsal beak fuscous. Sternite VII with a double notch, very thin medially, stepping up to second transverse region before expanding laterally. Dorsal beak extending beyond anal styles. Dorsal beak produces slightly oblique angle with posterior margin of abdominal segment 9. Ovipositor sheath fuscous with piceous tip extending beyond dorsal beak.
