Description. Adult. Colouration. Dark brown to almost black ( Fig. 105 View FIGURES 105–110 ). Head, pronotum and mesopraescutum with pattern consisting of fine whitish or yellowish lines, mesoscutum only with longitudinal lines. Ocelli reddish. Antennal segments 3–5 yellow to brown with dark tips. Clypeus whitish. Metapleura orange or yellow. Tibiae and tarsi yellow. Forewing ( Fig. 123 View FIGURES 111–133 ) transparent, colourless with smaller or larger dark brown or black dots around radular spinules in cells r 1, r 2, m 1, m 2 and cu 1 as well as at apex of clavus, sometimes almost absent; veins yellow or light brown with brown tips. Hindwing whitish, transparent, clavus slightly infuscate. Abdomen with two longitudinal submedian rows of whitish dots; intersegmental membranes yellow or orange. Young specimens orange or brown getting gradually darker with age.
Structure. Head inclined in a 30° angle from longitudinal body axis. Genal processes irregularly narrowing towards blunt apex, 0.4–0.6 times as long as vertex along midline ( Fig. 114 View FIGURES 111–133 ). Antenna 2.7–3.1 times as long as head width. Rostrum short, only apical segment visible in profile, 0.4 times as long as head width. Forewing ( Fig. 123 View FIGURES 111–133 ) 2.5–3.1 times as long as head width, 1.9–2.5 times as long as wide, broadly, irregularly rounded apically, most strongly curved in cell r 2; pterostigma moderately long, broad at base, about as wide as adjacent part of cell r 1; cell cu 1 0.8–1.0 times higher than wide; surface spinules present in all cells but much reduced, usually present in apical half of cell r 1, in the middle of cells r 2, m 1, m 2 and cu 1 along wing margin, and in cell cu 2 leaving broad spinule-free stripes along the veins, more robust and more expanded on pigmented areas. Metatibia 0.5–0.6 times as long as head width. Terminalia as in Figs 130 View FIGURES 111–133 , 144, 145 View FIGURES 134–156 , 160 View FIGURES 157–167 . Male proctiger 0.4 times as long as head width, with narrow, slightly curved posterior lobes basally. Paramere simple, lamellar, slender in apical third; apex ending in a single small, forward directed slerotised tooth; inner surface sparsely covered in long setae. Distal segment of aedeagus expanded in apical third, consisting of a distal oval dilatation and a proximal tooth; sclerotised end tube of ductus ejaculatorius short, almost straight. Female proctiger 1.3–1.4 times as long as head width, dorsal outline very weakly sinuous, apex obliquely truncate; circumanal ring 0.2–0.3 times as long as proctiger. Female subgenital plate 0.5–0.6 times as long as proctiger, apex pointed.
Measurements (in mm; 6 ♂, 7 ♀). Head width ♂ 0.78–0.86, ♀ 0.76–0.96; antenna length ♂ 2.34–2.70, ♀ 2.22–2.76; forewing length ♂ 1.98–2.34, ♀ 2.26–2.48; male proctiger length 0.32–0.36; paramere length 0.32–0.34; length of distal segment of aedeagus 0.32–0.34; female proctiger length 1.04–1.20.
Fifth instar immature ( Figs 109, 110 View FIGURES 105–110 ). Colouration. Dirty whitish. Apices of flagellar segments brown. Sclerites on head and thorax dirty yellowish. Head and thoracic tergites with orange dots. Wing pads and legs yellowish grey. Abdomen with one median and each a sublateral row of orange dots on each segment, dorsally.
Structure. Body 1.3–1.5 times as long as wide. Antenna 9-segmented, often division of segment 8 and 9 incomplete, 1.8–2.2 times as long as forewing pad. Marginal setae on forewing pad weakly capitate, particularly the longer ones, long and medium long, the longer setae mostly longer than distance between bases of adjacent setae; setae on dorsum of wing pads pointed ( Fig. 169 View FIGURES 168–174 ). Circumanal ring large, strongly indented anteriorly ( Fig. 172 View FIGURES 168–174 ).
Measurements (in mm) and ratios (7 immatures). Body length 1.42–1.64, antenna length 1.04–1.22.
Etymology. Noun in genitive case. Named after its host genus Copaifera .
Distribution. Brazil (GO, MG, MS, MT, SP).
Host plant, biology and habitat. Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. , perhaps also C. marginata Benth. —Cerrado, transition to riparian and Atlantic forest, disturbed vegetation around cultures, parks.
Comments. Mitrapsylla copaiferae differs from other copaiba psyllids as indicated in the key. It is morphologically similar to M. compta and M. fumipennis in the short genal processes, the forewing which is slightly angled in cell r 2, the simple, long and slender paramere and the long female terminalia. It differs from the former in the slightly longer genal processes, the absence of a continuous submarginal band on the forewing, the apically narrower paramere, the distal portion of the aedeagus which is strongly inflated and the female proctiger with the dorsal outline slightly more indented subapically. From the latter it differs in the forewing membrane which is colourless rather than infuscate, the apically narrower paramere and the longer apical dilatation of the aedeagus.
Based on the short genal processes, the weakly angular forewing and details of the male and female terminalia, Mitrapsylla minuticonis Brown & Hodkinson from Panama is closely related to M. copaiferae . Its host plant is presently unknown, but we postulate that it is Copaifera .
