Opeatocerata smithi sp. nov.
( Figs 152–160)
Diagnosis. Anterior cercus with a proclinate dorsal projection in lateral view ( Figs 154, 155), anterior margin rounded in dorsal view ( Fig. 156); epandrium lobe truncate at apex ( Fig. 155); phallus subcylindrical, wider medially, with dorsal subapical narrow appendix ( Fig. 159).
Description. Male ( Fig. 152). Head: Face slightly divergent toward the proboscis, dark brown, with gray pruinescence visible in ventral view, about 4 X longer than lower width. Ocellar tubercle protuberant, brown with gray pruinescence; ocelli light brown. Antenna light brown with black bristles; postpedicel about 1.5 X longer than pedicel; stylus about 2.5 X longer than postpedicel. Proboscis yellow shorter than head height. Thorax yellow, shiny ( Fig. 152). Legs yellow, except for hind femur and tibia with brown apical ring and all tarsomeres 4–5 black; hind tibia with anterodorsal, posterodorsal and posteroventral rows of longer bristles; hind tarsus with anterodorsal and posterodorsal rows of longer bristles. Wing ( Fig. 153) hyaline, pterostigma, brown, conspicuous, about 2.4 X longer than wide. Halter light yellow. Abdomen yellow, shiny ( Fig. 152); tergite 8 divided in two subtriangular plates; sternite 8 divided in two trapezoidal plates. Terminalia: Anterior cercus with a proclinate dorsal projection in lateral view ( Figs 154, 155), anterior margin rounded in dorsal view ( Fig. 156); descendant plate subrectangular with lower margin slightly bilobate in posterior view ( Fig. 157). Posterior cercus with acuminate apex in lateral view ( Figs 154, 155); without dorsal projections ( Fig. 156). Hypoproct subtriangular in lateral lateral view ( Fig. 155) and comma-shaped in posterior view ( Fig. 157). Epandrial ventral lobe truncate at apex, spiniform bristles mesially and longer bristles apically ( Fig. 155). Hypandrium longer than wide, with rounded apex and median sinus ( Fig. 160), without long bristles. Phallus subcylindrical, wider medially, longer than hypandrium, with dorsal subapical narrow appendix ( Fig. 159). Subepandrial sclerite wider than long, U-shaped ( Fig. 158). Bacilliform sclerite folded and longer than subepandrial sclerite ( Fig. 158). Specimen length: 2.9 m; wing length: 3.5 mm. Female. Unknown.
Geographical distribution. Brazil (Amazonas) ( Fig. 211).
Type material. HOLOTYPE ♂, labelled: Brasil, AM[azonas], Maués, Rio Abacaxis, Campina Pacamiri, 04º 35 ’ 49 ’’S / 58 º 13 ’ 14 ’’W, 30–31.v. 2008. Malaise na mata. J. A. Rafael e equipe ( INPA).
Holotype condition. Postallar, scutellars and acrostichals bristles lost; left wing mounted on microslide; abdomen in microtube with glycerin.
Etymology. The specific name is in tribute to K.G.V. Smith due to his contribution to the knowledge on the Neotropical fauna of Empididae , particularly the Brazilian fauna.
Remarks. Opeatocerata smithi sp. nov. has an anterior cercus with proclinate dorsal projection ( Fig. 155), descendant plate subrectangular in posterior view ( Fig. 157), subepandrial sclerite U-shaped ( Fig. 158) and phallus with dorsal subapical narrow appendix ( Fig. 159), all characters similar to O. spinipenis sp. nov.. Differs from the latter by the hypoproct subtriangular in lateral view ( Fig. 155), epandrial lobe with truncate apex ( Fig. 155) and phallus without lateral spines ( Fig. 160). Opeatocerata spinipenis sp. nov. has hypoproct bacilliform in lateral lateral view ( Fig. 163), epandrial lobe with rounded apex ( Fig. 163) and phallus with lateral subapical spines ( Fig. 168).
