Bryothinusa koreana , new species

Description. Small, body length 2.5 mm. Body shape more or less parallel-sided. Head, pronotum, elytra and abdomen dark brown; tergites VI–VII black. Head. Slightly deflexed, almost as long as wide. Eyes small, setae present between about 14 facets, shorter than tempora. Neck absent. Microsetae more or less uniformly distributed. Antenna with 11 antennomeres; all antennomeres longer than wide. Infraorbital carina absent. Mouthparts. Labrum ( Fig. 7 ) broadly and evenly rounded in apical outline, 7 þ 7 major setae distinct, lateral setae short. Mandibles ( Fig. 8 ) asymmetrical, right with median tooth, tooth absent on left, apex pointed. Maxilla ( Fig. 9 ) with galea and lacinia elongate, galea narrower and shorter than lacinia; galea corneous, filiform setae present on tip, absent on mesal surface; lacinia with 2 indistinct and 5 distinct spines interdigitating with spinose scales, a pair of hook-like setae present near base of lacinia; maxillary palpus with 4 articles, elongate, article 3 dilated, cardo elongate. Labial palpi ( Fig. 10 ) with 2 articles and indistinct article at tip oriented mesally, extremely elongate, most setae distributed basally; twin pores present; two minute setae present on ligula; two medial setae present side by side, setal pore and real pores present, median pseudopores absent in narrow median area, pseudopores absent on each side; a pair of comb-like hypoglossae present. Mentum ( Fig. 11 ) with antero-lateral angles prolonged into spinose processes, anterior margin deeply truncate, two long medial setae present. Thorax. Pronotum almost as long as wide, narrowest at base and widest near apical third, basal margin slightly rounded, apical margin slightly prolonged anteriorly; 3 macrosetae present on apical margin, 3 on apical third, and 2 at basal margin on each side; microsetae uniformly distributed; pubescence at midline directed anteriorly, at lateral margin directed laterally. Hypomera entirely visible in lateral aspect. Mesocoxal cavities contiguous, not margined posteriorly; mesosternal process sharply pointed, reaching almost half of coxal cavities. Legs. Tarsal formula 4-4-5; two empodial setae present. Elytra. Almost as long as pronotum; microsetae numerous, directed posteriorly, uniformly distributed; 10 macrosetae evenly distributed; posterolateral margin slightly sinuate. Hind wings absent. Metasternum with 1 pair of macrosetae. Abdomen. Sides uniformly converging to rounded apex; apical margins of tergites III–V broadly V-shaped. Tergites III–V impressed at base. Sternites not constricted at base. Tergite VII with small gland opening. Tergite VIII ( Fig. 12 ) with posterior margin sinuate, 4 pairs of macrosetae present. Sternites V–VII with many pores scattered. Sternite VIII ( Fig. 13 ) with 6 pairs of macrosetae, posterior margin wrinkled. Aedeagus. Median lobe as in Figures 16 and 17 . Paramere as in Figure 15 . Spermatheca as in Figure 14 .

Type Series. Holotype, labeled as follows: Korea: Jeonnam Prov., Jindo, Imhoemyeon, Gumgab beach, 21 VIII 2001, K.-J. Ahn, J.-H. Ahn, S.-J. Park, C.-W. Shin, M.-J. Jeon, under stones in the intertidal zone ; Holotype, Bryothinusa koreana Ahn Desig. K. - J. Ahn 2002. deposited in the Chungnam National University Insect Collection, Korea . Paratypes, 57; same data as type.

Distribution. Korea (only known from type locality).

Comments. Bryothinusa koreana can be distinguished from other Korean species by combination of: all antennomeres elongate, mandibles with pointed tip, compound eyes small, hind wings absent, and sternites V–VII with many pores scattered.
