Alcyonium varum McFadden & Ofwegen, 2013 View in CoL
Material examined: BBB 2016: St 18; St. 26; St. 32; St. 36; St. 38.
Distribution: Channels of the Central Patagonian Zone between 48°17’30’’S, 74°20’10’’W and 51°36’20.8”S, 73°55’33.8”W in the Chilean fjord region (15–26 m) ( Ofwegen et al. 2007 as A. roseum ); Burdwood bank (134–607 m) (present study).
Remarks: It is a membranous species completely attached to alcyonacean axes and polychaete tubes. The records of the present study represent the first in Subantarctic Atlantic waters (and the deepest), and hence at both MPAs, and reinforce the connectivity between the Chilean and Argentinian Patagonic fauna.
Synonyms at the area: Alcyonium roseum Ofwegen et al. (2007) (invalided by homonymy, see McFadden & Ofwegen 2013).
