Type material. Polynoe longisetis , SYNTYPES: 2 spms. (dry), Lussin, Adriatic Sea, leg. E. Grube, MPW 355. Polynoe laevigata , type material not available.

Additional material. 1 spm., St. 291, 27 March 1953, Marseille, gravelle aÁ Peyssonnelia, Coll. PeÂreÁs.

Diagnosis. Anterior pair of eyes dorsolaterally on widest part of prostomium. Elytra: margin smooth; surface with one or more patches of smooth conical microtubercles near outer lateral margin and usually patch of rough conical microtubercles near elytrophore insertion zone. Dorsal and ventral tentacular cirri and dorsal cirri papillate, swelling subdistally then abruptly tapering to fi liform tip.

Description. Prostomium bilobed, with distinct cephalic peaks; median antenna with large ceratophore in anterior notch, style papillate, swelling subdistally then abruptly tapering to fi liform tip, and with two pigmented bands distally; lateral antennae with small ceratophores inserted ventrally and with short, papillate styles, swelling subdistally then abruptly tapering to fi liform tip, and with only one distinct pigmented band distally; palps smooth, longer than median antenna and tentacular cirri; anterior pair of eyes dorsolaterally on widest part of prostomium, posterior pair dorsally near hind margin. Tentaculophores inserted laterally to prostomium, each with one or two chaetae and a pair of papillate dorsal and ventral tentacular

IG. 8. Harmothoe longisetis (St. 291, 27 March 1953, Marseille). (A) Anterior end; styles of median antenna, of left tentacular cirri, and of left dorsal cirrus from chaetiger 3 missing; dorsal view; (B) right middle elytron; (C) smooth conical microtubercles of patch near outer lateral margin; (D) rough conical microtubercles of patch near elytrophore insertion zone; (E) style of dorsal cirrus (scales 5 2 mm for A, B; 100 M m for C, D; 1 mm for E).

cirri, swelling subdistally then abruptly tapering to fi liform tip, and with two pigmented bands distally. Second segment with fi rst pair of elytra, biramous parapodia, and long ventral buccal cirri, similar to tentacular cirri (fi gure 8A).

Fifteen pairs of elytra; elytral margin smooth; surface with one or more patches

smooth conical microtubercles near outer lateral margin and usually patch of rough conical microtubercles near elytrophore insertion zone (fi gure 8B -D). Styles

dorsal cirri papillate, swelling subdistally then abruptly tapering to fi liform tip, extending beyond neurochaetae, each cirrus with two pigmented bands distally gure 8E); styles of ventral cirri papillate, tapering, shorter than neuropodia.

Parapodia biramous, both rami with single aciculum penetrating epidermis; notopodia with short, rounded presetal and longer, pointed postsetal acicular lobe, neuropodia with subconical presetal acicular lobe with digitiform supra-acicular process and shorter rounded postsetal lobe. Notochaetae stouter than neurochaetae, with distinct rows of spines and blunt tips; neurochaetae with distinct rows of spines only in distal part and bidentate tips with prominent secondary tooth.

Remarks. (1) Harmothoe longisetis has often been confused or synonymized with Malmgreniella glabra (Malmgren, 1865) , e.g. in McIntosh (1900), Fauvel (1923) and Chambers and Muir (1997). According to Augener (1928) and our own observations on the type material of H. longisetis and M. glabra (lectotype of Laenilla glabra Malmgren, 1865 , NRM 2382), the two species are distinct, H. longisetis having cephalic peaks, ventrally inserted lateral antennae, and anterior pair of eyes

the widest part of the prostomium, while M. glabra shows no distinct cephalic 1906 peaks, the lateral antennae are inserted terminoventrally and the anterior pair of
