Diagnosis. Anterior pair of eyes dorsolaterally on widest part of prostomium. Elytra: margin with fringing papillae; surface covered by thorn-shaped pointed microtubercles and few scattered papillae, with a row of large pyramid-shaped macrotubercles near posterior margin. Dorsal and ventral tentacular cirri and dorsal cirri papillate, tapering.

Description. Prostomium bilobed, with distinct cephalic peaks; median antenna with large ceratophore in anterior notch, style papillate, tapering; lateral antennae with small ceratophores inserted ventrally and with short, papillate, tapering styles; palps papillate, about as long as median antenna and tentacular cirri; anterior pair

eyes dorsolaterally on widest part of prostomium, posterior pair dorsally near hind margin. Tentaculophores inserted laterally to prostomium, each with two

chaetae and a pair of papillate, tapering dorsal and ventral tentacular cirri. Second segment with fi rst pair of elytra, biramous parapodia, and long ventral buccal cirri, similar to tentacular cirri (fi gure 13A).

Fifteen pairs of elytra; elytral margin with fringing papillae; surface covered

thorn-shaped pointed microtubercles and few scattered papillae, with a row of large pyramid-shaped macrotubercles near posterior margin (fi gure 13B, C). Styles

dorsal cirri papillate, tapering, pigmented basally and extending beyond neurochaetae (fi gure 13D); styles of ventral cirri papillate, tapering, shorter than neuropodia.

Parapodia biramous, both rami with single aciculum penetrating epidermis; notopodia with short, rounded presetal and longer, pointed postsetal acicular lobe, neuropodia with subconical presetal acicular lobe with digitiform supra-acicular process and shorter rounded postsetal lobe. Notochaetae stouter than neurochaetae, with distinct rows of spines and blunt tips; neurochaetae with distinct rows of spines only in distal part, upper bidentate with small secondary tooth distally, tooth often reduced or abraded, lower unidentate.

Remarks. Harmothoe aspera might be confused with H. bellani sp. nov. and. lagiscoides serrata Day, 1963. These three species share elytra with thorn-shaped pointed microtubercles, but H. bellani has no macrotubercles (fi gure 16B, C), while

H. lagiscoides serrata macrotubercles are slender and thorn-shaped (fi gure 14B,), in contrast to the large pyramid-shaped macrotubercles in H. aspera gure 13B, C).

Measurements. Specimen fi gured herein: L 10 mm, W 2 mm for 36 chaetigers.
