Colletes meridionalis Schrottky, 1902 View in CoL

Colletes rufipes meridionalis Schrottky, 1902 View in CoL . Lectotype ♀ (here designated), deposited in MZUSP, examined. Type locality: Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul.

Colletes extensicornis Vachal, 1909 View in CoL . Lectotype ♂, deposited in MNHP, examined. Type locality: Brazil, Pernambuco, “M. de Gaulle”. New synonym.

Colletes meridionalis View in CoL ; Moure, 1945.

Diagnosis. Colletes meridionalis is similar to C. rufipes , from which it can be readily distinguished by the black labrum in C. meridionalis (light or dark-ferruginous in C. rufipes ), by the fore coxa bearing a spine in C. meridionalis (fore coxa without spine in C. rugicollis ), and by the ventral region of mesepisternum, near the apex of episternal groove, with swollen area delimited by short and dense pilosity in C. meridionalis (ventral region of mesepisternum, in C. rufipes , ordinary, lacking swollen area delimited by short and dense pilosity).

♀/♂—Labrum black, impunctate, but with longitudinal sulci; clypeus with mid-longitudinal depression; hypostomal carina ordinary; mid-posterior region of mesoscutum with small, smooth impunctate area; ventral region of mesepisternum, near ventral end of episternal groove, with swollen area surrounded by hairs; marginal zone of T1 flat.

♀—Malar area 0.6 times as long as interocellar distance; clypeus coarsely rugose; F1 slightly longer than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, concave and carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum spiniform, at least as long as its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum ferruginous; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa bearing a spine; punctation on T1 inconspicuous.

♂—Malar area 0.8 times as long as interocellar distance; clypeus without rugae; F1 slightly shorter than its apical width; gena, behind the upper eye margin, concave and carinate posteriorly; anterolateral angle of pronotum spiniform, at least as long as its basal width; pilosity on mesoscutum ferruginous; pilosity on mesepisternum, ventrally, sparse; fore coxa bearing a spine; punctation on T1 moderately coarse and dense, generally sparsely punctate on disc; S7 as illustrated in Figures 6 View FIGURE 6 E, 6F; genitalia as illustrated in Figures 7 View FIGURE 7 E, 7F.

Comments. In the original description of the species, Schrottky (1902:345) states that the syntype series was composed by two females from the state of Rio Grande do Sul, collected by Dr. von Ihering. The types do not bear a label with these data, but the information recorded under the number “17.585” in the fourth volume of the catalogue of the Hymenoptera collection of the MZUSP is the following: Date unknown; identified as Colletes rufipes Smith , by Ducke in November [19]13; collected by H. von Ihering in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, thus agreeing with the statement by Schrottky. It should be noted that a third female C. meridionalis labeled “17.585” and “100.081” and identified as C. furfuraceus Holmberg, 1886 by Friese in 1907 was also found in the MZUSP. Although clearly belonging to the same lot of bees, this species is not part of the type series, since it was not mentioned by Schrottky (probably because it was sent previously to Friese for identification).
