Holotype (male): Vietnam (Lao Cai) Hoang Lien Son, Phan xi Pang (Fansipan) NW slopes near Sin Chai; tourist camp; RMNH /EvN no: 2003070; RMNH 2003-1041; 17.ix.2003; Light trapping; primary mountain broad leaved evergreen forest; 2100m; C. vd Berg & J.V.Nieukerken; UTM: 48Q UK 745687 ( NCB).
Paratypes: 1 male: the same data as holotype ( NCB); 1 male: the same data as holotype ( IEBR); 7 males: the same data as for holotype except ‘ RMNH /EvN no: 2003060’ ( NCB).
Description. Head: Head 0.72–0.73 times (n=10) as wide as pronotum, one pair of black oblique fasciae between eyes and anterior arms of epicranial suture, ocular tubercle with black marking, supra-antennal plate prominent; distance between lateral ocelli and eyes slightly longer than distance between the two lateral ocelli; ocelli reddish; antennae black; frons greenish ochraceous with black markings; ocelli brown-red; eyes pale brown ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A); genae pale yellow-brown; lorum black; postclypeus greenish ochraceous, prominently swollen, series of 8–9 transverse brownish-black fasciae on either side; anteclypeus pale yellow-brown with two brownish black spots on the centre, and apex black; rostrum pale yellow-brown, reaching posterior coxae, central longitudinal line darker, apical rostrum black ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B).
Thorax: Pronotum and mesonotum pale brown; pronotum with two central obconical spots at posterior margin, very indistinct median longitudinal line and somewhat indistinct triangular fascia crossing each side of disk of pronotum, blackish; pronotal collar slightly tinged with grey, with small black tooth on lateral margin, lateral angle broadened; mesonotum with two submedian sigillae black, lateral sigillae on each lateral area black spot in front of anterior angles of cruciform elevation; cruciform elevation pale yellow-brown, posterior margin black, slightly oblong towards abdomen ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A); thorax in ventral view grey, with dense pile, basisternum 2 and 3 black, meracanthus 3 long brown-black ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B).
Wings: Fore and hind wings hyaline, the veins brownish olivaceous; forewing length about 2.6–2.8X its width with brown infuscations on basal veins of second, third, fifth, seventh and eighth apical cells and on apices of longitudinal veins near ambient vein ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A, B).
Legs: All legs with markings as follows: coxa yellowish brown, femur pale brown with black apex, tibia pale brown, and pretarsal claw brownish black ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B).
Abdomen: Short, obconical, length about 1.3X length of mesonotum (including cruciform elevation), and distinctly shorter than space between apex of head and base of cruciform elevation, with dense white pile, olivaceous much shaded with black in dorsal view; timbal organs absent ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A); sternites III–VI olivaceous with posterior margin black, sternites VII, VIII black, lateral margin with dense white pile ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B).
Operculum: Pale brown, transverse, surface slightly prominent, reaching to two thirds length of abdominal sternite III, apex rounded, median margin slightly convex, lateral margin sinuate at base and thereafter about straightly oblique to nearly straight distal margin, opercula widely apart from each other, with a distance about as wide as operculum ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B).
Male genitalia: Pygofer 0.72 times as long as wide ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C); upper pygofer lobe brownish black with distal margin slightly rounded in lateral view ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A); basal lobe of pygofer slightly oblique, apical part distinctly prominent, rounded in ventral view ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C), and slightly overlapped by upper pygofer lobe in lateral view; uncus with basal part large and distinctly expanded laterally, uncal lobes separated from each other by deep slit medially, each uncal lobe with lateral stout spine ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 B, C), lateral margin of uncal lobe basally convex, and concave to lateral spine.
Measurements in mm (mean (range)): 10 males: body length: 27.0 (26.2–27.4); forewing length: 40.1 (39.4– 40.5); fore wing width: 14.8 (14.3–15.4); head width: 9.1 (8.9–9.5); head length: 2.8 (2.6–2.9); pronotum width: 12.8 (12.3–13.0), pronotum length: 5.2 (4.9–5.6); mesonotum width: 10.8 (10.5–11.4); mesonotum length: 8.8 (8.3–9.1).
Biology. This species was collected by light trapping at night in primary, mountain, broad-leaved, evergreen forest at an altitude of 2100 meters.
Distribution. Northern Vietnam (Lao Cai Province)
Etymology. Hoang Lien is the type locality of the species, a national park of Vietnam.
