Diagnosis. This species may be distinguished from S. syama by the following diagnostic characters: 1) white tinged with blue markings present on wing uppersides of females in negrita ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 21–24 ), whereas they are absent in syama ( Figs. 11 View FIGURES 9–12 , 15 View FIGURES 13–16 , 19 View FIGURES 17–20 ); 2) dorsal extensions of juxta tapers to sharp end, less than 50 degree on both sides in negrita ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 35–39 ), whereas they attenuate to blunt end, wider than 60 degree on both sides in syama ( Figs. 26 View FIGURES 25–29 , 31 View FIGURES 30–34 ); 3) costa of valva forms an short, triangular inner process in negrita , ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 35–39 ) whereas it forms longer, lobe-like inner process in syama ( Figs. 26 View FIGURES 25–29 , 31 View FIGURES 30–34 ); 4) cornutus is an oval sclerite with prominent spines in negrita ( Fig. 39 View FIGURES 35–39 ), whereas it is a narrow band with small spines in syama ( Figs. 29 View FIGURES 25–29 , 34 View FIGURES 30–34 ).
Discussion. Spindasis syama lamuae , ssp. nov. was found to be obligatorily associated with Crematogester popohana and C. amia . These two ant taxa are both considered endemic to Taiwan, with the latter sometimes considered as “race” of the former ( Lin 2011). Myrmecophilous associations of the other subspecies of S. syama and S. negrita are hitherto unknown, but there seems little doubt that they should be associated with other Crematogester ant species.
