Types. Neotype, male, unverified, CMNZ, Quail Island , Lyttelton, New Zealand (designated by Serejo & Lowry, 2008).
Material examined. 2 specimens, AM P.3406 (old collection), Stewart Island , New Zealand (not examined) . 1 male A, 24.5 mm, dissected, AM P.100717, 1 male B, 21.5 mm, dissected (illustrated), AM P.100718, 3 specimens (20.5 mm, 18.5 mm, 13.5 mm), AM P.3402, Dunedin , New Zealand ; 3 specimens (22 mm, 23 mm, 25 mm) ZMUC unreg, Putarenas, Schythe, February 1892 (remaining label unclear, Chilton identification,) . 5 males (17 mm, 17 mm, 15 mm, 15 mm, 13 mm) ZMUC unreg, Kaikoura, 1 November 1922 ( Chilton identification, no registration, no other details) . 9 specimens (7 females, unmeasured; 1 male, 19 mm, 1 premature male, 11 mm), ZMUC unreg, Paysequr Point , R . S. Sutherland, November 1921, ( Chilton identification) ; 11 males (largest specimens 18 mm mm), BMNH 1928.12.1.2364-2374, New Zealand, no other location details, Stebbing collection .
Type locality. Quail Island , Lyttelton, New Zealand .
Variation. Not significant.
Diagnosis. Gnathopod 1 propodus subtriangular with well-developed posterodistal lobe. Gnathopod 2 propodus palm with midpalmar sinus. Pereopod 7 sexually dimorphic, merus broad (subtriangular), carpus expanded (subrectangular). Epimeron 3 posterior margin minutely serrate, posterior corner subquadrate. Uropod 2 endopod with marginal robust setae in one row.
Size. 11 to 23 mm.
Remarks. Hurley (1957) placed O. serrulata as a junior synonym of Orchestia chiliensis Milne Edwards, 1840 , however the species was reinstated by Serejo & Lowry, 2008 which re-established T. serrulata as endemic to New Zealand, with O. chiliensis distribution again restricted to the South American coastline. The material from the Discovery Expedition identified by Alfred O. Walker was re-examined here in and identified as Orchestia aucklandiae .
Habitat. S upralittoral.
Distribution. New Zealand. Bay of Islands ( Dana 1852a). North Island: Moa Point, Wellington; Kapiti Island ( Hurley 1956). South Island: Hoopers Inlet, Otago Peninsula; Portobello Marine Biological Station; Kaikoura, Lyttelton ( Hurley 1956; Chilton 1909; current study). Chatham Island: Te Whakuru, Cape Pattison, The Horns ( Young 1929). Auckland Islands: Ewing Island, Dog Island, Enderby Island ( Chilton 1909; current study). Campbell Island ( Chilton 1909). Stewart Island ( Chilton 1909).
