Diagnosis. FEMALE. Palp femoragenu with distinct lateral notches. Palpalae l”G 1.7–2 times longer than dF. Body, including gnathosoma, 280–330 (in specimens from Catharus ustulatus in USA about 360 long). Setae h2 55–80 long. Vulva without long lateral folds. Genua I and II with 3 setae (v ” absent). Apical segment of legs III with 5 setae, apical segment of legs IV with 4 setae.
Type material. Holotype female ( CNCI), 25 female and 5 male paratypes ( AVB ZISP 13-0325-008, 1-30) from Junco hyemalis (Linnaeus) ( Passeriformes : Emberizidae ), Manitoba, Winnipeg, Summerland, 4 October 2003 coll. T.D. Galloway and D. Holder (SM 1169 #4); 10 female paratypes ( AVB ZISP 13-0325-009, 1–10) from same host and locality, 4 October 2003, coll. T.D. Galloway and D. Holder (SM 1170 #3); 12 female paratypes ( AVB ZISP 13-0325-010, 1–12) from same host and locality, 7 April 2004, coll. T.D. Galloway and D. Holder (SM 1302).

Hosts and distribution. This species is known from the various North American passerines belonging to the families Emberizidae , Turdidae , and Cardinalidae ( Bochkov and Galloway 2013; present paper). Moss (1979) misidentified mites from Junco hyemalis , Melospiza melodia , Passerella iliaca , Calamospiza melanocorys (Emberizidae) , Sialia currucoides (Turdidae) , and Passerina amoena ( Cardinalidae ) as H. brevis .
