Genus Ogcodes Latreille, 1796: 154  .

Type species, Musca gibbosa Linnaeus, 1758  ; by subsequent monotypy by Latreille, 1802 (species cited as Syrphus  ).

Refs.: Latreille, 1802: 432; Schiner, 1864: 30 (cat.); Coquillett, 1910: 578 (list of type species); Schlinger, 1960: 245–247 (rev.); Gillung & Carvalho, 2009: 33 (in key), 38 (diagnosis); Winterton & Gillung, 2012: 5 (in key); Schlinger et al., 2013: 63 (in key).

= Henops Illiger, 1798  . Type species: Musca gibbosa Linnaeus, 1758  ; by monotypy. Latreille, 1802: 432 (synonymy).

= Henops Meigen, 1803: 266  (preoccupied by Illiger, 1798). Type species: Syrphus gibbosus Fabricius  (= Musca gibbosa Linnaeus, 1758  ); by monotypy. Meigen, 1804: 150. Coquillett, 1910: 550.

= Oncodes Meigen, 1822: 99  ; Blanchard, 1840: 584. Unjustified emendation.

= Ogeodes Gimmerthal, 1847: 167; Schlinger, 1953: 320 (lapsus).

= Ogkodes Schiner, 1865: 989  (misspelling).

= Thersites Philippi, 1871: 292  (preoccupied by Pfeiffer, 1855: 141 (Mollusca); Bate, 1856: 59 (Crustacea); Bate, 1857; 271 (Crustacea); Pagenstecher, 1861: 118 (Crustacea)). Type species: Thersites jacobaeus Philippi, 1871  ; by monotypy.

= Thersitomyia Hunter, 1901: 152  . Replacement name for Thersites Philippi, 1871  . Type species: Thersites jacobaeus Philippi, 1871  ; by monotypy. Hunter, 1901: 152 (cat.); Kertész, 1909: 21 (cat.); Edwards, 1930: 188 (in key); Hennig, 1968: 3 –4 (as possible synonym of Ogcodes  ).

chilensis Sabrosky, 1945: 318  –319.

Holotype: male, without date (cited as deposited in C. Stuardo Collection, actually at MNNC but it is not deposited in this last institution and it is not at USNM, presumably lost). Paratype: male, Panguipulli. Dist. : Los Ríos (Valdivia: Panguipulli).

Refs.: Stuardo, 1946: 103 (cat.); Schlinger, 1960: 276 (key), 314 (dist., comments).

jacobaeus ( Philippi, 1871)

Thersites jacobaeus Philippi, 1871: 292  . Syntypes: female, male, Santiago province ( NMWAbout NMW but actually lost; according to Hennig (1968: 3), the type specimen is not deposited in this institution). Dist: Metropolitana (Santiago: without precise locality).

Refs.: Reed, 1888: 289 (cat.); Hunter, 1901: 152 (cat., as Thersitomyia  ); Kertész, 1909: 21 (cat., as Thersitomyia  ); Stuardo, 1946: 103 (cat., as Thersitomyia  ); Hennig, 1968: 3 (as possible Ogcodes  ).

Comments: Hennig (1968) indicates erroneously that this species was described by a single female, but Philippi (1871: 293) give measurements for a female specimen and indicate that “Das Männchen ist halb so gross wie das Weibchen, sonst nicht wesentlich verschieden” (= The male is half the size of the female, otherwise not essentially different). Clearly, Philippi (1871) had at least one female and one male, and then both are syntypes.

kuscheli Sabrosky, 1951: 189–190.

Holotype: male, Isla Masatierra, Islas Juan Fernández (Universidad de Chile Collection, actually UMCE). Paratypes: 1 female (originally designated as “ allotype ”) and 2 males ( UMCE) 2 males and 1 female ( USNMAbout USNM). Dist.: Valparaíso (Valparaíso: Isla Robinson Crusoe—flying in a little clearing at Portezuelo El Camote and at foot of El Yunque under thick fronds of Blechnum  ).

Refs.: Schlinger, 1960: 276 (key), 314–315 (dist., comments).

porteri Schlinger, 1953: 319.

Holotype: male, Viña del Mar ( INHSAbout INHS), female unknown. Dist.: Valparaíso (Valparaíso: Quintero, Viña del Mar).

Refs.: Schlinger, 1960: 276 (key), 315 (dist., comments), pl. 4 fig. 16.

triangularis Sabrosky, 1945: 317–318.

Holotype: male, Malloco (cited as deposited in C. Stuardo Collection, actually at MNNC but it is not deposited in this last institution and it is not at USNM, too. Presumably lost). Dist.: Santiago (Talagante: Malloco). Refs.: Stuardo, 1946: 103 (cat.); Schlinger, 1960: 276 (key), 314 (dist., comments).
