Phanerodon atripes ( Jordan & Gilbert, 1880) View in CoL .

Sharpnose Seaperch or Sharpnose Surfperch. To 29 cm (11.5 in) TL ( Miller and Lea 1972). Yaquina Bay, Oregon ( Bond and Olson 1985) to Islas San Benito, central Baja California ( Miller and Lea 1972). Depth: 12–229 m (40–750 ft) (min.: Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California; max.: Miller and Lea 1972). Miller and Lea (1972) report that this species can be found at the surface. We note that the several records for “surface” collections that we found (e.g., Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) refer to collecting dead specimens following explosions or benthic poisoning.
