Material examined. See Kotov (2003) for material from Kenya and Republic of South Africa; Kotov et al. (2003a) for material from Argentina, Guatemala, and southern Mexico.

Diagnosis of nominotypical subspecies. Chitinous insertions within distal segments of swimming setae not far from bases of segments; on IDL 3 clusters of relatively short setules; setules on distal lobe of limb II short; longest seta of exopodite III with short fine setules; seta 1 of exopodite IV relatively long; a hook on inner margin of limb V.

Distribution. Afrotropical zone: from Kenya ( Jenkin 1934) to the southernmost corner of the continent (Kotov 2003), and Neotropical zone: from South Mexico to Argentina ( Kotov et al. 2003a; Elías-Gutiérrez et al. 2006), in both cases, within a significant range of climatic conditions, from the tropics to a temperate climate.
