Castnia invaria trinitatis Lathy 1925 (Fig. 7)
Castnia icarus trinitatis Lathy : Lathy (1925).
This variable species is commonly associated with Bromeliaceae and is considered a minor pest of pineapple ( Ananas comosus ) throughout most of its distribution (González 2003; González & Fernández Yépez 1993; Miller 1986; Orellana & Erazo 2001). Subspecies C. i. trinitatis was named based on color patterns slightly different from the “typical form” of Castnia icarus (i.e. C. invaria volitans Lamas ) and “resembling the race penelope ” but “having hindwing above as in typical icarus ” ( Lathy 1925). The only two specimens we have seen from Trinidad were collected by R. Dick. Lathy (1925) described ssp.
trinitatis based on these two males in Madame Fournier’s collection – these two syntypes are now in the BMNH.
Material Examined: ST. GEORGE: 2ɗɗ (type series), St. Anne’s, R. Dick (BMNH).
