Material examined: Numerous specimens from Britain and Ireland including some from the Orkney Isles off northern Scotland.

Discussion: Although Schwoerbel (1959, p.526) put S. monstruosus Bader into synonymy under S. hibernicus Halbert , a placement recorded by K. O. Viets (1987, p.699), Pešić (2006), perhaps unaware of this change in species status, recorded S. monstruosus from Bulgaria. Interestingly, Schwoerbel (op. cit) considered S. hibernicus to be a ‘Mediterranean species’ but it is now known to have a broader European distribution.
