Type material: Holotype ( Piersig 1896), possibly not deposited in any scientific collection.
Type locality: Germany: Drebabach and Plothenbach streams, Thüringen ( Piersig 1896) .
Geographical distribution: Western Palaearctic ( Di Sabatino et al. 2010).
Distribution in Portugal: Centre: Beira Litoral ( Valdecasas 1988), in Fonte Fria, Mealhada, Buçaco mountain ( Lundblad 1956).
Ecological notes: Freshwater, mainly found in fast-flowing rivers( Stryjecki et al. 2018) and organic pollutiontolerant species; Larval insect hosts: Chironomidae dipterans ( Di Sabatino et al. 2010).

Type material: Paratype: Deposited in SMF, catalogue number 47270-1552-VIE/289 ( GBIF 2022) .
Type locality: Norway ( GBIF 2022): Roslandsaa, Jaederen ( Thor 1898b).
Geographical distribution: Western Palaearctic, remarkably Europe ( Di Sabatino et al. 2010).
Distribution in Portugal: Centre: Beira Litoral ( Valdecasas 1988), Alcobaça municipality ( Lundblad 1956).
Ecological notes: Mainly found on streams with a reduced flow; Larval insect hosts: Simuliidae and Chironomidae dipterans ( Di Sabatino et al. 2010).
Remarks: The species Sperchon meridianus Angelier, 1954 was considered a synonym of S. setiger , which was recently verified as valid species based on molecular data ( Pešić & Smit 2022).

Geographical distribution: Europe ( GBIF 2022; Di Sabatino et al. 2010).
Distribution in Portugal: Azores Archipelago ( Koenike 1895b), including Terceira Island, and São Miguel Island (Lagoa do Congro, Lagoa das Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo) ( Barrois 1896); Madeira Island ( Borges et al. 2008; Hughes et al. 1998).
Ecological notes: Freshwater ( Borges et al. 2008; Hughes et al. 1998), in flowing tributaries and standing water bodies ( Barrois 1896; Di Sabatino et al. 2010); Stenothermic species ( Pešić 1999).

Distribution in Portugal: North: International Minho River ( Cantallo et al. 2021), tributary section “Rio Mouro, Ponte do Curto” (Monção municipality, 42º4′29.27″N, 8º23′39.12″W).
Material examined: 1 undetermined sex adult; Ponte do Curto , Portugal; 42º4′29.27″N, 8º23′39.12″W; 24 September 2020; coll by Aquamuseu Team; catalogue number NatMIP-CATr-0014 GoogleMaps .
Ecological notes: Freshwater, common in rheohelocrenes springs, with crenophilous-type habit; larvae parasites of insect-chironomids ( Di Sabatino et al. 2010).
Remarks: First record mentioned for Portugal ( Cantallo et al. 2021).
