Coleopterocoris nelsoni Longo, Ribeiro et Nessimian View in CoL , n. sp.
( Figs. 3–8)
Types. The male holotype and 33 paratypes are deposited in DZRJ , seven paratypes in MNRJ , and 10 paratypes in MZSP .
Measurements (male / female). Body length (from apex of head to apex of hemelytra at rest): 1.98–2.15 / 2.18–2.25; maximum width of body: 0.93–1.15 / 1.05–1.20; maximum width of head: 0.51–0.58 / 054–0.58; length of head: 0.32–0.44 / 0.38–0.44; anterior width of pronotum: 0.61–0.67 / 0.62–0.67; posterior width of pronotum: 0.86–0.96 / 0.88–0.99; length of pronotum: 0.22–0.29 / 0.24–0.29; length of scutellum: 0.27–0.35 / 0.30–0.35; interocular width: 0.34–0.40 / 0.32–0.40; eye width: 0.08–0.12 / 0.07–0.10.
Diagnosis. Head with smooth surface, with very small setae on anterior region; eyes small, not projected laterally; interocular width four times eye width or greater. Pronotum smooth, with very small setae on lateral edges. Anterior portion of hemelytra with punctures on entire surface and brown spots on posterior region. Forefemora dilated and flattened. Apex of male genital operculum obtuse, with weak median prominence; basal plate triangular, with rounded apex, distinctly shorter than paramere; parameres with same width at all extension, without constriction at apex, rightangled upward near midlength.
Description
Holotype ( Fig. 3). General color yellowishbrown; brown spots on median and posterior regions of hemelytra; anterior portion of hemelytra lighter than posterior one.
Body flattened. Head surface smooth, with very few thin setae on anterior region. Eyes small, not projected laterally; internal edge of eyes rounded; interocular width at least four times eye width. Pronotum smooth, with very few thin setae on lateral edges; scutellum smooth, without thin setae; hemelytra with punctures on entire surface and few thin setae on lateral edges; forefemora dilated and flattened ( Fig. 8, FEM).
Male genitalia. Apex of genital operculum obtuse, with weak median prominence ( Fig. 4, MPR); basal plate triangular, with rounded apex, distinctly shorter than parameres ( Figs. 5–6, BAS); parameres (PAR) with same width at all extension, without constriction at apex, not arched, rightangled upward near midlength.
Female genitalia. Genital operculum with rounded apex, not produced as in male ( Fig. 7).
Color variations. We have seen several specimens with general color varying from uniformly brown to stramineous.
Etymology. The new species is named in honour of Prof. Dr. Nelson FerreiraJr. (Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), whose dedication to entomology has inspired and stimulated the authors in the study of true bugs.
Type material. Coleopterocoris nelsoni n. sp. was described based on specimens from BRASIL. Rio de Janeiro State — 1 m ( DZRJ 1186 ): Macaé, Rio Macaé [22 o 22’ S, 41 o 46’ W], 16.VIII.2001, (N. FerreiraJr.), holotype GoogleMaps . 5 m and 2 f ( MNRJ): same as holotype , 28.XI.2002, (N. FerreiraJr.), paratypes. 24 m and 9 f ( DZRJ 1177 ): same as holotype , 16.IV.2002, (N. FerreiraJr.), paratypes. 4 m and 6 f ( MZSP): same as holotype , 29.VIII.2003, (N. FerreiraJr.), paratypes. 1 m and 3 f ( DZRJ 1179 ): same as holotype , 27.I.2004, (N. FerreiraJr.), paratypes. 12 m ( DZRJ 1180 ): same as holotype , 28.VII.2004, (N. FerreiraJr.), paratypes. 1 m ( DZRJ 1183 ): paratypes , 16.VIII.2001, (N. FerreiraJr.), paratypes.
Comments. Coleopterocoris kleerekoperi and C. nelsoni n. sp. are quite similar. The general aspect of the body and operculum of C. nelsoni n. sp. do not differ from those of C. kleerekoperi , including the apex of operculum with a median weakly developed prominence (see Hungerford 1942). Specimens of C. nelsoni n. sp. differ from those of C. kleerekoperi by (1) the absence of brown maculae on hemelytra, (2) the interocular width at least four times eye width, and (3) the uniform parameres (apices without constriction) ( Fig. 6). Furthermore, the apex of the basal plate is rounded in C. nelsoni n. sp. whereas in C. kleerekoperi it is subacute.
