Type species. Cancer clibanarius Herbst, 1791
Diagnosis. Thirteen pairs of gills with entire lamellae (not divided). Small rostral salience acute. Ocular peduncles long and slender. Ocular scales very close. Antennal flagella with short setae. Endopod of first maxillipeds with lateral lobe. Third maxillipeds with crista dentata well developed. Chelipeds equal; fingers open horizontally, with corneous claw. In both male and females pl2-pl5 unpaired and biramous; with inner ramous very shorter in males.
