Type species. Pagurus setosus Filhol, 1885 [by original designation; gender masculine]
Diagnosis. Twelve pairs of gills (bi- or quadriserial); pleurobranch absent on fifth and eighth thoracic somites. Rostrum well developed or reduced. Ocular scales well developed or reduced, from simple to multidenticulate. Crista dentata usually well developed, no accessory tooth. Antennal scale elongate, spinose or spinulose. Chelipeds equal, subequal or unequal, with left larger than right, with corneous claw; similar or dissimilar in armature; fingers opening in horizontal or oblique plane. Fourth pereopods with or without preungual process. Fifth pereopods chelate. Males with pair of pleopods modified as gonopods at first and second pleonal somites; unequal biramous left pleopods on pleomeres 3–5 (fifth with inner ramus rudimentary). Females with pair of modified pleopods on first pleonal somite; brood pouch usually well developed, occasionally absent.
