Type species. Cancer tibicen Herbst, 1791 [by subsequent designation ( Dana, 1852b)].
Diagnosis. Thirteen pairs of gills with entire lamellae (not divided). Rostrum triangular, acute. Antennal flagella with very short setae. Maxilla with lateral lobe on endopodite. Third maxilliped with crista dentata well developed. Left cheliped much more strong than right; claws not corneous. Males with four unpaired pleopods (pl2– 5), inner lobe shorter than external. Females with first three pleopods (pl2–4), with two lobes strong; pl5 like in the males.
