Type species. Cancellus typus H. Milne Edwards, 1836.
Diagnosis. Fourteen pairs of gills with entire lamellae (not divided). Antennal flagella short, with very short setae. Endopodite of maxilla without lateral lobe. Ischium of third maxilliped with crista dentata well developed. Chelipeds equal, forming an operculum with the three distal articles of first and second ambulatory legs. Females with four, large, biramous unpaired pleopods (pl2 to pl5); males lacking pleopods entirely. Abdomen, uropods and telson symmetrical.
