Cypridopsis vidua ( O. F. Müller, 1776) View in CoL

( Figs 2 View FIGURE 2. A – E H and I)

For previous synonymies see Meisch (2000).

nomen nudum 2004 Cypridopsis biwaensis sp. nov. —Okubo: 38, figs 20 ad–af. Synonymy herein. nomen nudum 2008 Cypridopsis biwaensis Okubo, 2004 nomen nudum —Smith & Matzke-Karasz: table 1, pl. 2, fig. 9.

Remarks. Okubo (2004) reported this species as Cypridopsis biwaensis (a nomen nudum as no type material was designated or deposited), stating that the stripes of the carapace were different to those of C. vidua , specifically their colour (black in C. biwaensis , green in C. vidua ) and the presence of a horizontal bar linking the two centralmost stripes (missing in C. vidua ). However, such features attributed to C. biwaensis are known to exist in C. vidua , a very variable species (see the review of variation of this species in Meisch 2000). Therefore, herein C. biwaensis is considered to be a junior synonym of C. vidua . The carapace colouration is very variable in Lake Biwa, with specimens with black, grey, purple, brown, or green stripes, some with very strongly defined stripes, others with very weakly defined stripes, ranging from 3 to 5 in number, or with no stripes at all. The carapace shape is also rather variable with some specimens more ovate than others in dorsal view. Such wide variation is common in parthenogenetic species. The black striped variety of C. vidua is the most abundant one in the littoral zone of the lake. Localities ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ): 1–10, 14, 15, 17–28, 30–37.
