The new classification of Hesperiidae by Warren et al. (2008, 2009) recognises the long-standing subfamily Pyrginae , but with some important modifications with regard to the New World fauna. Thus, Pyrrhopygini , which was treated as the subfamily Pyrrhopyginae by Evans (1951), Mielke (2004), etc., and suggested as a sister group to Coeliadinae ( Evans 1951) , is now a tribe of Pyrginae . The subfamily Eudaminae is established for many Neotropical species formerly placed in the Pyrginae , including all of Evans’ genera groups B and C, group D apart from Celaenorrhinus ( Evans 1952) and some of group E ( Evans 1953). However, as far as the African fauna is concerned the composition of the subfamily Pyrginae has not changed. Warren et al. (2009) divide Pyrginae into seven tribes, of which three occur in Africa: Tagiadini, Celaenorrhini and Carcharodini . The first two are closely related, while Carcharodini is quite distant. This paper addresses the Tagiadini , and the other two tribes will be addressed in future contributions.
