Calleagris Aurivillius 1925 View in CoL
This genus of six species is restricted to Africa ( Evans 1937, Ackery et al. 1995). Based on its heterogeneous appearance, it has been suggested that Calleagris is paraphyletic ( Larsen 2005, Warren et al. 2009), but as Evans (1937) noted, the male genitalia are of a similar pattern, so the group is most probably monophyletic (Larsen pers. comm. 2010). Evans (1937) characterises the genus by the long porrect palpi, antennal club arcuate about or before the middle: male with a hair pencil or a very dense fringe on the hind tibiae. Very little sexual dimorphism and in contrast to the rest of the African Tagiadini apart from Procampta rara , females do not have anal wool. Pringle et al. (1994) report Paré’s observations on the biology of C. jamesoni (Sharpe) , which he found to feed on Julbernardia globiflora and Brachystegia boehmii (both Fabaceae ). The final instar caterpillars were “smooth and greyish white, with a rather bulbous red-brown head”.
