venustus species-group

( Figs 27D–M View FIGURE 27 , 28 View FIGURE 28 , 29 View FIGURE 29 )

Females. Mandible with four distal teeth, evenly developed, and curved upward; clypeus long, with clypeal carina indistinct from clypeus; antennal scrobe ecarinate; frontal angle of ocellar triangle acute; vertex concave. Pronotal disc with transverse carina complete; parapsidal signum with anterior half continuous; metapectal-propodeal disc strigate, paraspiracular carina present; anterior margin of propodeal declivity setose; distinction between metapectal-propodeal disc and metapleuron distinct by sculpture difference; mesopleuron with lower mesopleural fovea closed, posterior mesopleural fovea present, mesopleural suture opened, and posterior mesopleural sulcus present. Forewing with R1 vein indistinct. Mesotibia not spinose Metatrochanter with lateral expansion. Metasoma with distal spiracle of metasoma large. Posterior hypopygeal margin straight. Genitalia with 2vv as long as 1vv, and apex slender; sting (1vv+2vv) very long [surpassing 3vv apex]; T9 apex very swollen; 1vf strongly curved upward; 1rv strongly curved, with 1rv ventral process small, and posterior process short.

Males. Frons not or weakly coriaceous , with or without color reflect of body metallic. Clypeus long; median clypeal carina lower than epistomal suture, in lateral view; antenna not elongate; antennal scrobe ecarinate. Pronotal disc with transverse carina complete. Metapostnotum with first pair of metapostnotal carina and metapostnotal-propodeal suture convergence absent; propodeal declivity with sculpture present. Mesopleuron with lower mesopleural fovea and mesopleural suture opened. Forewing with Cu vein indistinct of cu-a and R-rs&Rs vein distinct. Hind wing with one proximal and five distal hamuli. Posterior hypopygeal straight. Genitalia with paramere as long as or longer than basiparamere; inner margin of basivolsella excavated.

Distribuition. It is mostly from Neotropical region.

Remarks. This species-group was described by Evans (1966) as having these characteristics: the mandible with four upcurved teeth, the antennal scrobe ecarinate or carinate, flagellomere I ring-shaped, and the transverse pronotal carina complete. The characteristic “flagellomere I ring-shaped” was observed also for males from the columbianus species-group, but, these groups are not easily mistaken for one another. This is probably because the characteristic mandible with four upcurved upward teeth is exclusive to this species-group and easily recognizable. In this revision we observed that the mesopleuron with “posterior fovea present” is also exclusive to venustus . Therefore, based on former described characteristics and on the new traits examined in this work, we reallocate some species and define the diagnostic characteristics of venustus . This species-group is composed of 25 species ( Table 1).
