Poecilimon sp. (near P. e l e g a n s Brunner, 1878)

a) Specimens from the type series of P. elegans Brunner, 1878

Material studied. Paralectotypes of P. elegans but probably belong to different species (labels printed, italics = hand written): Croatia: 2 3, Coll.Br.v.W., Obrovazzo [Obrovac near Zadar], Cro., Krezencky, P.elegans Fieb. det.Br.v.W., 4493 + 4163, in Coll. NMW; 2 3, Coll.Br.v.W., Curzola [= Korčula], Täubel, P.elegans Fieb. det.Br.v.W., 1 3 = 5547, in Coll. NMW; 1 Ƥ, Coll.Br.v.W., Curzola [= Korčula], Bucckick, P.elegans Fieb. det.Br.v.W., in Coll. NMW; 2 3, 1 Ƥ, Coll.Br.v.W., Metcovick [= Metkovic], Erber, P.elegans Fieb. det.Br.v.W., 1 3 = 3280, (all in NMW).

Measurements. Pronotum male 4.4–5.2, female 5.2–5.3; tegmen male 0.6–1.3, female 0.0; postfemur male 15.4–17.4, female 17.3–17.6; ovipositor 8.1–8.5 mm.

Description. Male. Scapus 1.2–1.7 x broader than fastigium verticis. Fastigium verticis dorsally furrowed. Discus of pronotum rounded; apex slight concave; ventral margin of paranota almost straight in front, rounded behind. Micropterous. Stridulatory file with 95–98 teeth, only slightly curved. Cerci gradually narrowing from base to about apical third, curved mediad in or behind apical third, slightly flattened before apex and continuously narrowed into apical tooth. Subgenital plate curved and narrowing behind middle; narrow apical part with subparallel sides; apex truncate with rounded projections at both corners.

Female. Scapus 1.0–1.2 x broader than fastigium verticis. Fastigium verticis furrowed dorsally. Discus of pronotum rounded; apex faintly concave or straight; dorsal margin in lateral view substraight; ventral margin of paranota very slightly concave or straight in front, rounded behind. Squamipterous, tegmina completely hidden. Cerci conical. Subgenital plate triangular, apex rounded. Ovipositor sabre shaped, apical quarter to third dentate; without or with only a faint nodule above basal fold.

Coloration. Green with black stipples. Pronotum with white lateral bands bordered medially in metazona by a red cuneate spot [hardly distinct as specimens are not well preserved]. Tegmina yellowish with a black spot at hind margin, speculum of discus infumate (at least between cu1b and cu2). Abdominal tergites green with an uninterrupted median and 2 lateral black lines; between lateral and median black lines a white band bordering the lateral lines or completely white [Coloration faintly distinct as the specimens are not well preserved]; 2 3 from Obrovazzo with indication of black lateral lines only.

Discussion. Extensive studies on the stridulation of specimens throughout the range of the P. elegans group should be done to settle the question of the taxonomic status of these and the following specimens. The morphological descriptions are given for convenience of further investigations.

b) Specimens from the locality with sound recording in Heller (1988)

Material studied: 4 3, 1 Ƥ, Montenegro, Lovcen-Pass, 25.VII.1979, K.-G. Heller; 1 3, Montenegro, Lovcen-Paß, 26.VII.1982, K.-G. Heller (Coll. Heller). 1 3, 1 Ƥ, Bosnia-Hercegowina, Orjen, SE Grab, 1000m, 24.VII.1978, S. Ingrisch (Coll. Ingrisch).

Measurements. Pronotum male 4.4–5.1, female 4.9–5.1; tegmina male 0.0–1.3, female 0.0–0.1; postfemur male 14.4–17.1, female 16.5–16.7; ovipositor 8.1–8.3 mm.

Description. Male. Scapus 1.0–1.1 (mean = 1.09) x broader than fastigium verticis. Fastigium verticis shallowly furrowed dorsally; parallel-sided or slightly widened in front. Discus of pronotum weakly rounded; dorsal margin almost straight in lateral view; apex faintly concave to almost straight; ventral margin of paranota almost straight in front, rounded behind. Squamipterous; tegmina less extending than in P. elegans . Stridulatory file with 106–114 teeth, only slightly curved; gradual transition from lager basal into smaller apical teeth after about 30 basal teeth. Cerci curved mediad in or behind apical third, slightly flattened before apex, apex rounded and apical tooth inserted (5 males) or continuously narrowed into apical tooth (1 male). Subgenital plate curved and narrowing behind middle; apical half with (5 males) or without (1 male) indistinct median keel; narrow apical part with subparallel sides; apex ± truncate with rounded projections at both corners.

Female. Scapus 1.05 x broader than fastigium verticis; shallowly furrowed dorsally. Discus of pronotum weakly rounded; apex faintly concave or straight; dorsal margin in lateral view circa straight; ventral margin of paranota very slightly concave or straight in front, rounded behind. Squamipterous, tegmina (almost) completely hidden. Cerci conical. Subgenital plate triangular, apex rounded. Ovipositor sabre shaped, apical quarter to apical third dentate; with a distinct nodule above basal fold.

Coloration. Male. Green with black stipples. Pronotum with white lateral bands bordered medially in metazona by a red cuneate spot; paranota with ventral margin white. Tegmina yellowish, speculum of discus (between cu1b and cu2) infumate and with a black spot at hind margin. Abdominal tergites green with an uninterrupted black median and with broad white lateral bands bordered externally by a black line; the white lateral bands sometimes extend onto the black median band.

Female. Green with black stipples. Pronotum with a narrow white median line and white lateral bands, bordered medially in metazona by a red cuneate spot; paranota with ventral margins white. Tegmina yellowish with a black dot at hind margin. Abdominal tergites as in males; Coloration indistinct or lacking on last tergites.

Discussion. A single chirp of a male from Lovcen-Pass is recorded in Heller (1988). We have thus to wait more complete sound recordings before we can decide on the taxonomic status of the specimens from that area.
