Distribution:Palaearctic ( Ozerov 2005).

Comments:This species is particularly common on pig dung, muck hills and manure near farm-houses, but can also be caught on cow pastures at alower frequency. There are some records of swarming behavior, which is supposedly linked to hibernation ( Pont 1987b), but to our knowledge such reports lack in Switzerland. As illustrated in Munari (1987), the morphology of the forefemur varies quiet drastically.
