Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Delaware to Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Antilles, and Brazil (Pará, Maranhão, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo) ( Barreto et al. 1993; Melo 1996, 1998; Mantelatto et al. 2004b; Coelho et al. 2008; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo include Ubatuba ( Mantelatto et al. 2004b; Alves et al. 2012b; 2013b; Assugeni et al. 2017) and Ilha Vitória ( Alves et al. 2012a). This species was included in the genus Damithrax ( Windsor & Felder 2014) that was posteriorly invalidated and M. hispidus was back assigned to Mithrax ( Windsor & Felder 2017) .
