REMARKS. This new species is very similar to a group of species that are of similar size and general morphology including C. aratayensis , C. cyrili , C. doxiptera , C. ensifera n. sp., C. gemella , C. hamata n. sp., C. socia , and C. viridicata . The bronzing is restricted to the distal half of the fore wings in this new species.

ETYMOLOGY. The name is in reference to the hooked terminus of the claspers in the species (L., hamatus, with hooks, hooked).

DESCRIPTION. Ground color ochraceous but green may predominate in fresh specimens.

Head. Head not as wide as mesonotum, ground color without markings. Ocelli rosaceous and ochraceous, rosaceous or ochraceous in paratypes. Eyes ochraceous, castaneous in some paratypes. Head covered with silvery pile, longer posterior to eye, dense, long, piceous pile between ocelli, extending laterally while decreasing in density to anteromedial eye continuing on anterolateral vertex anterior to eye and terminating on supra-antennal plate. Ventral head ground color covered with long silvery pile. Postclypeus ground color, centrally sulcate from anterior to posteroventral margin to around apex, with ten transverse ridges, long silvery pile on lateral margin, long piceous pile radiating from dorsal surface, long golden pile radiating from ventral surface. Anteclypeus ground color with longs silvery pile, radiating long golden pile. Mentum ground color, labium ground color with lateral piceous fascia on distal half, reaching to middle of hind coxae. Antennal segments ground color.

Thorax. Dorsal thorax ground color. Pronotum with piceous mark anteriorly between paramedian and lateral fissure, possible white pubescence in same area in some paratypes, covered with radiating golden pile, more dense in some paratypes, sparse, long piceous pile radiating from anterodorsal surface. Pronotal collar ground color with radiating golden pile. Mesonotum ground color, slightly darkened along parapsidal suture, mottling within submedian and lateral sigillae where muscles attach internally, lighter or darker in various paratypes, with radiating golden pile. Metanotum ground color. Long golden pile between anterior arms of cruciform elevation, long silvery pile posterior to anterior arms of cruciform elevation, on lateral mesothorax, posterior mesothorax, within and radiating from posterior wing groove, and on lateral metanotum. Ventral thoracic segments ground color except castaneous basisternum 2, trochantin 2, medial meron 2, and medial episternum 2, castaneous intensity varies in paratypes, covered with long and short silvery pile.

Wings. Fore wing and wings hyaline, distal half bronzed. Venation ground color becoming darker distally. Basal cell hyaline, clouded at base in some paratypes, pterostigma present, lines of infuscation in apical cells and on marginal area of fore wings, basal membrane of fore wing grayish. Hind wing venation ground color. Anal cell 3 and anal cell 2 along anal veins 2 and 3, anal cell 1 along anal vein 2 grayish.

Legs. Legs ground color, lateral and distal coxae castaneous, femora striped with castaneous, distal tibiae margined with castaneous, pretarsal claws ground color at base becoming castaneous with piceous tips. Fore femora proximal spine largest, angled to greatest degree, secondary spine upright slightly larger than tertiary spine, tertiary spine slightly angled with curved tip, all spines castaneous with piceous tips, very small piceous apical spine. Tibial spurs and combs castaneous with piceous tips. Legs with long silvery pile on coxae, radiating long golden pile on remaining segments.

Operculum. Male operculum ground color covered with long golden pile, white pubescence at base, lateral margin straight, angled slightly medially, rounded posterolateral and posterior margin, rounded medial margin, not meeting medially extending only to medial meracanthus, barely covering tympanum reaching to anterior of sternite II, domed laterally. Meracanthus broadly triangular, ground color, reaching medial opercular margin. Female operculum and meracanthus similarly shape and color, operculum reaching to posterior of sternite II, meracanthus extending slightly beyond posterior opercular margin.

Abdomen. Abdomen tergites ground color, tergites covered with golden pile, long silvery pile surrounding timbal cavity, long golden pile radiating from auditory capsule. Timbal exposed, white with castaneous ribs, seven long ribs and six intercalary ribs. Male sternites ground color with castaneous medial region expanding laterally along posterior margin, sternite VII with posteriorly curved castaneous mark across sternite, sternite VIII with castaneous posterior margin, sternite VIII with curved notch posteriorly, long golden pile radiating from sternites, epipleurites ground color with golden pile. Female tergites and sternites similarly colored to male except female sternites with piceous on posterior margin piceous, sternite VII completely castaneous. Female sternite VII with deep V-shaped medial notch, posterior notch extending as a point beyond sinuate posterior margin. Female abdominal segment 9 ground color with castaneous fascia along dorsal midline and piceous along ventral margin, radiating long piceous pile. Dorsal beak with piceous tip, extending well beyond piceous anal styles. Posterior margin of abdominal segment 9 curved.

Genitalia. Male pygofer ground color, medial basal lobe castaneous, tip of dorsal beak piceous. Dorsal beak narrow, about twice as long as anal styles. Pygofer basal lobe extended, angled mediad with rounded apex radiating dense golden pile. Upper pygofer lobes elongated, flattened, bent at approximate right angle near base, with dense long golden pile. Claspers short, finger-like with rounded terminus. Basal lobe appendage flattened, crossing across midline, curved with pointed tip and short point on medial side near tip producing a C-shape near medial tip, length of short point variable in paratypes. Aedeagus tubular, castaneous.

Female gonocoxite IX ground color. Gonapophysis IX castaneous, gonapophysis X piceous. Ovipositor sheath extends beyond dorsal beak. Long golden pile radiating from ovipositor sheath.

MEASUREMENTS (MM). N = 10 males or 1 female, mean (range). Length of body: males 25.07 (23.85–26.0), female 25.9; length of fore wing: males 32.53 (31.3–33.4), females 32.9; width of fore wing: males 11.82 (11.35– 12.25), female 11.9; length of head: males 3.93 (3.85–4.05), female 3.9; width of head including eyes: males 7.74 (7.6–7.9), female 7.7; width of pronotum including suprahumeral plates: males 11.14 (10.9–11.3), female 11.2; width of mesonotum: males 8.76 (8.6–8.95), female 8.85.

DIAGNOSIS. This new species is very similar to a group of species that are of similar size and general morphology including C. aratayensis , C. cyrili , C. doxiptera , C. ensifera n. sp., C. gemella , C. hamata n. sp., C. socia , and C. viridicata . Carineta lichiana Boulard, 1986a and C. modesta Sanborn 2011a are smaller versions with a similar appearance. It can be distinguished from C. socia and C. viridicata by the lack of bronzing of the distal fore wings and fore wing apical cells of these species with only longitudinal lines. Carineta cyrili , C. doxiptera and C. gemella have dark bronzing in the distal fore wings rather than the light bronzing characteristic of C. hamata n. sp. The fore wing bronzing is similar to C. ensifera n. sp. but this new species has different genitalia and the shape of the male and female opercula has a rounded rather than tapered medial margin as well as different genitalia. In addition, C. cyrili , C. doxiptera , C. ensifera n. sp., C. gemella , C. socia , and C. viridicata have male and female opercula that also taper to the medial margin rather than having the rounded medial margin of this new species. Only C. aratayensis has an operculum of similar shape to this new species but differs in that the secondary femoral spine is angled instead of perpendicular to the femoral axis, the pygofer distal shoulder forms a right angle to the dorsal beak rather than an obtuse angle with the dorsal beak, the upper pygofer lobes are straight rather than being bent in the middle, the basal lobe appendages are thin, straight extensions with a laterally bent tip rather than the smoothly curved and tapered basal lobe appendages, and female sternite VII has a wide notch rather than the narrow notch found in this new species.

DISTRIBUTION. The species is known only from the holotype collected in Santa Cruz.
