Genus Oncotympana Stål, 1870

Pomponia (Oncotympana) Stål, 1870: 710 . Type species: Pomponia (Oncotympana) pallidiventris Stål, 1870 ( Fig. 3 A, B).

Oncotympana: Distant, 1905a: 60 , 70.

Dokuma Distant, 1905a: 69 . syn. nov. Type species: Dundubia nigristigma Walker, 1850 ( Fig. 3 C).

Remarks. The genus Dokuma Distant syn. nov. is synonymized here with the genus Oncotympana because Dokuma has a body size, male opercula, forewing venation, and male genitalia identical with those of Oncotympana . The only feature that may distinguish Dokuma from Oncotympana is the slender and rather cylindrical male abdomen, but this is interpreted as infrageneric variation because the shape of the male abdomen is transitional among the congeners. Based on this synonymization, Dokuma nigristigma (Walker) is transferred to Oncotympana to become Oncotympana nigristigma (Walker) comb. nov. ( Fig. 3 C).

The species Dokuma consobrina Distant syn. nov. ( Fig. 3 D) is here synonymized with Oncotympana viridicincta Stål ( Fig. 3 E) because no morphological differences are found between the two species.

The genus Oncotympana has been considered to include eleven species from the Philippines and continental Asia (e.g., Metcalf 1963a): O. pallidiventris ( Fig. 3 A, B), O. viridicincta ( Fig. 3 D, E), O. fuscata Distant ( Fig. 4 ), O. maculaticollis (De Motschulsky) , O. ella (Lei & Chou) , O. expansa (Walker) , O. mahoni Distant , O. melanoptera (Distant) , O. obnubila (Distant) , O. stratoria Distant , and O. virescens Distant. However , the type species of this genus ( O. pallidiventris ; Fig. 3 A, B) is not congeneric with O. fuscata ( Fig. 4 ) and its relatives based on the following distinguishing characters: medial pronotal collar very narrow, about one-fifth the length of inner area; male operculum reduced and small, widely separated; forewing with a narrow cubital cell, less than a half the thickness of medial cell; vein radius anterior 2 of forewing nearly straight; male abdomen more or less translucent ventrally; aedeagus very thin; uncal lobes widely separated at base. Therefore, O. fuscata ( Fig. 4 ) and its relatives from the continental East Asia, Japan, and India, which were previously placed in Oncotympana , may not be treated as congeneric with O. pallidiventris ( Fig. 3 A, B). A new genus is erected below to include these species.

As a result of the aforementioned synonymizations and the description of the new genus below, four species are currently included in Oncotympana : O. pallidiventris ( Fig. 3 A, B), O. viridicincta Stål ( Fig. 3 D, E), O. nigristigma (Walker) comb. nov. ( Fig. 3 C), and an undescribed Oncotympana sp. listed below, all from the Philippines.
