Laminosioptes cisticola ( Vizioli, 1869)
Sarcoptes cisticola Vizioli, 1869: 268 .
Sarcoptes cysticola .—Mégnin 1979: 147, 1880: 151.
Laminosioptes cysticola .— Canestrini & Kramer 1899: 9; Seddon 1968: 139.
Laminosioptes cisticola .— Domrow 1992: 1505.
Host and locality in Australia: Gallus gallus , widespread in Australia ( Domrow 1992); Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia ( Seddon 1968).
Current name of host: Red Junglefowl (domestic hen), Gallus gallus ( Linnaeus, 1758) ( Galliformes : Phasianidae ).
Notes: The name of this species was originally spelled as cisticola ( Vizioli, 1869) . However, ever since Mégnin (1879, 1880) first used the spelling cysticola , the name has almost always been spelled as cysticola in the formal taxonomic literature. Both spellings are in use in the veterinary literature. Earlier references and localities are listed by Domrow (1992). Seddon (1968) records L. cysticola on fowl, turkey, pheasants, geese and pigeons, but those do not appear to be Australian records.
