General distribution. Europe: Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, France (incl. Corsica), FYR Macedonia, Greece (excl. Crete), Italy (incl. Sardinia and Sicily), Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro, Portugal (incl. Azores), Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland. West Asia: Turkey. North Africa: Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, ( Zapparoli 2002; Minelli et al. 2006).
Chorotype. Mediterranean (MED).

Ecological notes. 0–2100 m; an euriecious species, in Quercus coccifera scrub, in thermophilous or mesothermophilous broadleaved woods, in Platanus riparian woods, in Abies cephalonica , Fagus sylvatica or Pinus nigra forests, in Mediterranean phrygan, and in agroecosystems ( Verhoeff 1901; Attems 1929b; Zapparoli 1994, 1996).
Remarks. Zapparoli (2002) supported that " Crytops [sic!] Gabrielis Fabr." and " Crytops [sic!] laevigatus Br. " both quoted from Peloponnisos in Brullé (1832), are here assigned to H. gabrielis in congruence with Gervais (1847).
