The natural distribution of Artema ranges from the Sudanian region of West Africa ( Fig. 24 View Figs 23 - 24 ) to Central Asia. Millot (1941) was the first to record the genus from West Africa, and he noted that most of his material of “ A. mauriciana Walckenaer, 1837 ” (= A. atlanta Walckenaer, 1837 ) did not agree well with previous illustrations of this pantropical species. After comparing numerous West African specimens with A. atlanta from all over the World, we agree on these substantial morphological differences and formally describe the West African species below.
