Lorryia atyeoi was described by Baker (1968a) based on a single tritonymph, collected from litter in vicinity of Richland (Missouri, USA). Baker (1968a), page 996: “The long dorsal body setae set on strong lobes are distinctive. Adults are not known”. In fact, these stout and subtly serrated setae are extremely long, not much shorter than body. Jointly with attractive reticulation it gave this species as one of the most beautiful and simultaneously most eccentric among Tydeinae, and resembles a miniature porcupine.
Lorryia atyeoi remains mysterious until 2005, when it was recorded from Hungary (Ripka et al. 2005).
Material examined. 2 females (slide 86 =AK H-017) collected by D-Vac in Festucetum plant association, in a nature conservation area, Budapest XI, Sas-hegy, 12 May 1998, coll. B. Kiss.
Diagnosis. Body green, almost spherical, with lobed surface and reticulated. Females larger than Baker’s tritonymph (220): length of female I: 310, female II: 330. Genital setal pattern: (0-6-4). Bothridial setae distinctly shorter (about 90) than other rest of setae, slender and smooth. Length of remaining dorsal body setae: about 100 (ro) to 245 (c1, e1). Most setae more than 200 long. Terminally situated ps1 smaller (60), but similar in shape. Setae ps2 minute, situated off valves.
Remarks. The absence of setae h 2 in this species is unique. In his original description, Baker (1968a) did not mention its absence which is evident from his original figure (fig. 28). All other features of our specimens correspond to the original description.
