Morphological characters. Ratio of width of eye to width of head (at widest parts) no more than 0.5. Gena with setulae only yellow/white. Generally, the occiput with at least one row of black setulae behind the ocular setae, with setulae only yellow/white ventrally. However, some specimens with occiput with all setulae only yellow/ white. Prescutellar acrostichal setae absent. Proepisternum uniformly setulose with setulae only yellow/white. Some male specimens with long setulae on the hind tibia. 1st and 2nd abdominal sternites with setulae only yellow/ white. Body length 5–10 mm.
Geographical distribution. Australia (New South Wales, Queensland)—AUSTRALASIAN/OCEANIAN.
Biology. Sarcophaga littoralis has been collected at ocean beaches ( Johnston & Tiegs 1922) and documented to have emerged from the common purple snail, Janthina janthina (ANIC collections). This species has also been collected at decayed-carrion baits by KAM.
Taxonomy. This species belongs to the monotypic subgenus Hardyella. DNA barcode sequences of S. littoralis have been deposited in both GenBank and BOLD.
