Morphological characters. This species has been documented as one of the most morphologically variable Australian flesh flies. The male terminalia and thoracic chaetotaxy show high intraspecific variation. 2nd and 3rd antennomere at least partly yellow. Generally with a bare proepisternum, but some specimens from New Guinea have a few black setulae. Gena with setulae only black. Occiput with at least one row of black setulae behind the ocular setae, with setulae only yellow/white ventrally. Prescutellar acrostichal setae present. Apical scutellar setae present in males, but either absent or present in females. Some male specimens with long setulae on the hind tibia. Body length 5–10 mm in females, but 10–15 mm in males.

Biology. Sarcophaga bancroftorum has been collected at decayed-carrion baits by KAM.
Taxonomy. This species belongs to the monotypic subgenus Fergusonimyia. DNA barcode sequences of S. bancroftorum have been deposited in both GenBank and BOLD.
