Diagnosis.— Males of Eridantes utibilis are characterised by a large, curved embolus (E) with a bent tip ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25 – 32. 25 – 28 ), the shape of the embolic division (arrow, Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25 – 32. 25 – 28 ) and the fingerlike palpal tibial apophysis (PTA) ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 25 – 32. 25 – 28 ). Females are recognised by the presence of a pale median triangular region (arrow) and the rounded spermathecae (S) flanked on each side ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 25 – 32. 25 – 28 ).
Distribution.— Known from Québec (present records) and Nova Scotia to Wisconsin and New York (see Buckle et al. 2001).
Remark.— The numerous records from the boreal forest of Québec suggest that it may be locally common in conifer forests, especially among mosses and litter. Interestingly, most collections were done with Berlese extraction of litter. Other trapping methods in the same location were not as productive.
